Asprin for goats ??? JOINT ILL

Okay I am putting this here so maybe someone will see it. My little girl seems to have joint ill from the reading I have been doing. The vet gave her Nufor and banimine. The Nuflor is recommended in cattle for joint ill from an upper respiratory infection. My little goat had a runny eye and nose (clear) and the swollen painful front knees and a fever 105.4.The vet gave her a dose of each at the office and one more dose for today. The fever is better and the runny eye and nose dried up this am but her knees really hurt her.She tries to nurse but mom isn't very patient she wants her to follow and the little one doesn't want to go that far. I don't want to put them up cause I want the little one to keep moving. Has anyone had experience using asprin for pain?? She weighs 16lbs. I have used the banimine the vet rx'd don't want to use too much as it isn't really good for them.

banamine helps with the inflamed and painful knees, helps to reduce the swelling. it also lowers temp and is a painkiller. although not a good med for longterm therapy, it is an excellent choice for your little doe. continue with it.
the amount of aspirin you would need to get the same result can hurt her tummy.

Maybe you could pen them for parts of the day so the little one can rest her joints.

I hope she gets well soon.

The vet only gave me 2 doses. Which she has had. I am trying to look ahead so I can keep the inflamation down and hopefully keep damage to the joint to a minimum. Is there a better choice than asprin? I know it can hurt their tummy.

if you don't see improvement you could call your large animal vet and ask if there is anything more you can do. it needs a little while until she heals. i would give her vit b after all the antibiotic. keeps her in good appetite and helps to built back the gut bacteria.

Bigeloil. Go get some from your co-op, farm supply, etc. It is a horse linament that works wonders on joints. I use it on my own knees. I have used it on goats. Contains thymol, menthol (aromatic), methyl salicylate (aspirin varient), capsicum (red pepper), salicylic acid 0.65% (aspirin), oils of juniper (aromatic) and pine (aromatic).

The stuff in parentheses I put there. From all the aromatic (minty) stuff in it, you know it is good at killing pain. My football-blown knees love it.

Once the antibiotics start healing the joint ill, her legs shouldn't be as sore. You can only give Banamine to a goat for 3 days without risking hurting thr liver. You may need to bottle feed her if the dam isn't letting her eat.

JimS I think maybe it helped some.It is hard to tell. The meds seem to be working for now.I haven't use asprin .The vet recommended childrens ibuprophen(Liquid). She likes the taste so it is easier to get into her.She gets another shot of nuflor today. It is a really painful shot.Talk about feeling like a meanie. If I get her better I will never be able to catch her.

I remember always getting a sucker from the doctor, so whenever I have to give something like nuflor or sulmet or another stingy or nasty tasting thing- I give the kids a *sucker*for being good LOL...actually I draw up a bit of snowcone flavoring in a needle-less syringe (cherry is the fav here) I squirt the sweetie into their mouths. They get where they actually run to me, instead of away LOL. Just makes it much easier on all of us, if it ends on a good note. Hope you little girl continues to improve.
