Boer question

I was wondering how many of you out there show their Boer goats? Also when showing them is it necessary for them to have their horns? We have a pet quality boer now that has horns. My 5 yearold shows her in costume class at our local county fair. There usally are quite a few boer goats at our fair, but this there are none. Our goat now has horns, but if I was to get more I think I would prefer them dehorned. Thanks for the input.

You need to talk to your county extension agent as well as the local 4-H goat show persons as to the rules about horns. In Kansas, the horns need to be covered or clipped back or dehorned. The National Boer Goat Associations have their own rules. I do not dehorn my Boers unless a buyer requests that they be disbudded as kids. I do not show my goats.

I'm going to a Boer goat show tomorrow - I'll let you know what I find out!

I went to the Boer show yesterday at the Tillsonburg Fair. I ended up handing out ribbons and prizes (friends of mine were running it).

There were some nice, nice goats there - one two-year old buck was just about big enough to throw a saddle on and ride him!

Anyway, to answer your question - in Canada, at least, it doesn't seem to matter whether or not they have horns.

Next year, I'll be doing the prize for the Grand Champion - an original art work of a Boer goat. Just gotta get some good photos to work from. Of course, I'm also hoping to have something to show, but I guess it's unlikely that I'd win Grand Champion in my first year of showing.

In the Boer goat associations in the US, horns are no longer required on goats to show them. I don't show them, but my friend has and we disbud all our kids. She actually sold all her horned Boers last week because horns were just too hard for her to deal with in he herd. They use their horns to hurt each other, damage equipment and they get stuck in fences.
