Question A banding question...

I put off banding Fred, the little Saanen, till he was a month old. (early June) Well, it all went well at the time, but for the past couple of weeks his scrotum has seemed empty and flat, without the remains of the testicles in it. I was wondering if they slipped back inside? He has not been acting bucky, like his brother Chandler, who is a buck. Chandler jumps and leaps and mounts and is generally obnoxious, in a very sweet way of course. Fred just acts and frolics like any other little wether.
The band that we used was quite old, but it seemed strong enough.
Do you think Fred is still a buck, or did he get succesfully wethered? Even if they did slip back in, would they be damaged enough to ensure that Fred couldnt breed, and act bucky?
I'd post a pic, but I'm not sure that would be appropriate....

Pfft...appropriate?!!? This is not really a place to worry about the propriety of pictures when it concerns any aspect of husbandry and animal care. Not really being experienced with banding ( I cut early ) I'm not sure of what you are describing....as I understand when you band all of the tissue including the testicles become necrotic and basically drop off...not really sure about an " empty sack " being left. hopefully someoene experienced with banding will come to help soon.

yeah, thats baisically it. but, the scrotum stays full, it doesnt go all flat. At least, it always has on all my other wethers.

I never cut... I know its considered to be more humane, but it just scares me. What if it did something horribly wrong? Banding has always worked well for me... This is the only time something unusual has happened. This is out of goats AND sheep, put together.

You may be seeing them just before they drop off. In that case they might look flat. The scrotums on my banded wethers dropped off intact. They looked like flat rabbits feet lying on the ground.

The testicles turn all mushy as they die. I mean lets face it, it is rotting flesh below the band once the circulation is cut off. The scrotum will usually feel all flat and empty after several weeks, it should. If you felt both testicles in the scrotum *after* you banded him...there isn't any way they could have slipped back up.

He he, thats a good way to desribe it. Except, they arent flat here. They are shrivled, but you can tell theres something in there.

Huh. If you all think thats the way it should be, then so be it. But it just dont look like the others I've done.
