snake bit?

found my 5 month old nubian female with swelling on the leg between the knee and the hip. some swelling did get down to the hoof but not much. it was hot to the touch and she shied away as though it hurt when i pressed it. she acted normal. she ate well as usual and kept up with the herd unless they ran. joints worked fine.

after two days the swelling has gone away completely and she is back to normal.

snake bite??? what else could it be?

Bee and other insects can do that, too. I've had goats get stung and the whole side of their face swelled up. It was pretty alarming.

Lot of rat snakes around here and they are pretty aggressive. One struck at me several weeks ago and grazed my hand. They aren't poisonous but a bite could get inflamed.

I bag about one big fat rattler a year out of my yard and this year have killed a very large copperhead. Cottonmouths of course because of all of the ponds, never seen a coral snake out here though. Oh yes and chicken snakes gallor! Some call them rat snakes but they will always be chicken snakes to me! Some of those suckers are close to 6-7 feet long!

Feral, Thats cause all of the Coral snakes are in my yard. We have moved 3 within the last 1.5 years out of our yard. I almost stepped on one in the middle of the night when I went outside to check on why the dogs were barking. One of the coral snakes is on display at the snake farm in New Braunfels.

troy and sarah, where in Texas is that?

BTW, my snakes are occasionally on display too, just not in a good way.

I am pretty sure I have had two goats bitten by copperhead snakes; one young kid and a mature doe. Both were bit on the upper leg and had both local and general swelling. I could also see where the fang(s) entered the skin.

The location of your bite seems consistent with a snake bite. I have heard that a snake will strike at a level about 1/3 their length.

i dont think it rained cats and dogs... i think it rained chicken (rat) snakes. had to dispatch another one two days ago. it was going through the hay in the goat manger where the chickens like to set. it was barely big enough to eat a banty egg but it sure had a surprisingly strong squeezing grip on my gloved hand. ive decided that instead of killing them i will just relocate them down at my moms creekland.
