First doeling rule

Isn't there some unwritten rule that the first doeling of the Spring has to be kept? ;-)

We had twins night before last and the doeling is cute and incredibly sweet. My 12 year old carries her around and she will follow him anywhere - even though they are on the dam right now. He calls her "his goat" and really doesn't want to sell her.

Sigh. Tell me that there is a goat owners code that requires that the first doeling of every Spring has to remain with the farm.... then I don't have to decide.

Our 1/2 Nub doe is due any day and I think my wife would prefer to keep a doe out of her if she has one, since it would be 3/4 nub and have richer milk, presumably.

Especially if a child begins carrying the kid around. If the goat kid FOLLOWS your human kid, you might as well make it a law if it isn't one already.

The breeder I bought my GP from has several children, including some very young ones. If I remember rightly, she "reminds" the little ones each time one of their dogs whelp or goats kid that they are not named (they do nickname the animals tho) and will be going to live elsewhere.

Seems like it would be MUCH harder with a 12 y/o! They already think their parents are getting weirder by the day. Anyway, it's very touching a 12 y/o boy is so sensitive toward baby animals .

Sell goats...you must be joking??? Every year I tell my now 14 year old son that all bucklings must go...so far we have not sold or given away a single goat. We started with 2 3 years ago and now are up to 8 and have one more doe yet to kid. This year he has started the same thing with lambs. He decided to keep a pair to breed them himself instead of buying or rescuing lambs each year.
