Banded the Bucklings

My nieces little bucklings are now on their way to being wethers I had never done this before, but it was nowhere near as hard as I thought.... I expected to have a major problem getting them to hold still, but I was done before they knew what was going on

Have they been vaccinated for CD/T? Tetanus is a possibility at the band site.

Lots of people give a shot of tetanus antitoxin when the bands are applied just as a precaution

How long does it take until the "goods" drop off?

I have never vaccinated in 17 years of banding goats (and calves, for that matter). So I am wrong on two counts:

#1: I am banding, which any vet will tell you is not a good thing to do. I am supposed to be cutting and pulling, not banding.

#2: I am not vaccinating.

I guess 2 wrongs make a right, I have never had a single issue, and who knows how many I have done by now.

We don't vaccinate either.

We band ours at 3-4 weeks of age, and it takes about 3-4 weeks for it to fall off.

I vaccinated 'cause everything I read said I should, but honestly Gramp had goats his whole life (he died at 84) and my mother (nor I) ever remember him vaccinating when he banded them. Grandma used goats to pull her and the older kids to town in a cart to sell her eggs, milk, butter and soap 'cause she didn't like horses that well (her Grandfather died from a horse kick to the head)... Gramp always kept goats until the last few years he was alive and I never remember any dying from tetanus or him ever talking about such a thing

Michelle, it's about how you manage them. I think it is possible they could contract tetanus in certain management scenarios, but I don't have any of those factors. Vaccination has its values in certain scenarios. I just choose to manage against needing it, cuz frankly, management is cheaper than drugs. And every penny counts to my bottom line...or against it.
