what is it about milking? sigh...
I am embarassed to tell most of my friends but I assume you would all understand...
What is it about milking that is so peaceful and pleasant? I come home from work tired and wanting to rest yet I look forward to sitting there, leaning against that course side of hers and working into a rythm.
Ok - I sound like a social idiot but I do love it!
I have only been milking for a little over two weeks now and I am hooked. I can't wait for the other two to freshen.

I had a doe so easy to milk that depending on my mood, I'd either start with her or end with her as it was such a pleasure to milk her.
It's a primal sort of pleasure, very satisfying.
When you have a doe that is a PAIN to milk, it can be a whole different story! My second doe in milk (when I first got them) tried to make my life hell for a few weeks, but we're best buds now .

I feel the same way (24 years after getting my first goat! So the feeling does last!). But, I have two does who are hard to milk -- not fussy, just small teats and make my hands hurt -- and will be glad to see them go. I'll put them in the freezer pretty soon if nobody buys them. (They are both yearlings and will probably be a lot better next year, but we don't need as much milk as we are getting anyway.)

We talked about this just last night. It's a zen-like experience. I think it's the quiet, the rhythm, the communion with a peaceful animal. Then, there's the part where it's the only times we sit down during the day!

I enjoyed the goats' personalities as soon as we got them, but watching Rose milk was just a so-so experience. Then, she had to go back to Texas for a while, and the job fell to me full time. Even with muscle spasms in my neck from arthritis and bone spurs, going to the milk house twice a day and milking our Alpine (her name is Orange) was a peaceful project.
Milking is special.

I have five children, so I particularly like the evening milking when I can leave four of them up at the house with daddy. My youngest is 9 months...and I also have a 3, 5, 8 and 11. The 11 year old and myself milk. It's nice to spend some time with him.....and it's nice to get a break from the baby. Something only milking affords. I am so busy inside I don't seem to enjoy the outside as much as I want--and I sure the heck don't get out in it enough--especially with the little one. But I can feel tension draining away on my way down to the barn.
Sitting there milking in quiet......it's a nice break. Almost as good as a bubble bath. O.K., I'm reaching....but can't remember the last time I had a bath without a little one splashing over the side! LOL! I thought milking would be another thing on the to-do list. Turns out I actually look forward to it.
And, I too, had a problem milker--made my life heck for awhile there. She settled in (with the help of hobbles) and now I even enjoy her. It's very calming. Unless, of course, ALL of the children come down with me. Then it's business as usual! But I'll take the calm when I can get it. If I try hard I can even relax with all the kiddies running around!

I work for lawyers 5 days a week. Believe me, after a day of that, milking goats is a joy I look forward to! It's the rythm of the milking, the sound of their eating, my head leaning on their side as they breath, the nuzzle I get as I give them their treat when they're finished on the milk stand. There's just nothing better!

You'll only get agreement from us! If more people got to come home to a warm goat belly, there would be less troubles in the world.

I have to agree. Milking is the best two times of my whole day! I am milking four by hand, and it is SO peaceful and relaxing.

I wholeheartedly agree with everyone here. I enjoy chores. What gets me is when I'm busy and my sons or my dh have to do them and they complain about it! I try to explain how I actually 'like' doing them and it is peaceful, and that I'd rather do that than anything else!
They just look at me with disbelief and shake their heads. Meanwhile, I complain that I'm stuck in the house!
I just got my milking machine yesterday - which I have mixed feelings about. Glad because milking ten productive milkers is hard on the hands. Sad because even though it will be in the next room - it is noisy! I don't even own a vacuum cleaner because of the noise! I'd rather sweep and mop! (no carpets)

Such great replies - I love the one that said "then there's the part about it being the only time I sit down.....". ;-)
Last night, I got ready to milk and knew that my 8 year SHOULD have been going to bed but would give his eye teeth to come up with daddy and chat at me while I milked. I bent the rules a bit, had him pull on his rubber boots and we did it together. I LOVE those times and they will always be precious memories to me and, hopefully, to my children. By the way - I have 6 kids myself so there is a bit of an 'escape'.
Animal/garden chores put me in the best mood possible. just brushing the horses or moving them from one field to the other relaxes me. Now I can add milking the goat to the list.
By the way - she really needs a name!

I know what you mean about milking and favorite does . My fav. doe (whom might I add is the most strong headed, piggish, stubborn thing you ever saw ...'cept with me ) is my FAVORITE to milk...great big teats, soft udder, big orfices...also if she runs out of grain she will just chew her cud while you milk....or one time our milkstand broke. So I put a bucket with grain on the ground, led her up to it and she just stood there while I milked her out .
I just adore milking this gal....she makes my night so yep I know what you mean. I come home and look forward to milking my girl (the other girls are fine also ) but Brandy just has a special place in my heart...everytime after milking is all done and I head out she will come up for one last scratch on her chin before I leave .
