Buck Lost his Drive???

Last fall we seperated out Billy from our doe's to keep him from breading with the 4 month's old doe's. Since then he's gained a lot of weight. and Had a rough winter. He got into a fight with our other Buck and broke the other's buck's neck When the buck got twisted up. So he lost his Partner. He seemed sad for a week or so afterwards. He's can see the doe's in the other pen andeven talk to them. He's Boer and a great breeder. We got 8 baby females from him all big and strong. anfast growing. We have taken the Teen does out and put Billy back in the pen he's been in there for 2 weeks and have not shown no interest in the females like he had last year. He just goes his own way and eats by his self and sleeps away from the pack. We have looked at his teeth and he appears to be about 6 or 7 years old. Is there any way to tell if billy has lost his Drive for the ladies?

.
If the does are not in heat he will not bread them if they come in he will.

Usually in the fall when the weather gets cooler around Sep. or Oct. they will bread.

He probably won't breed until the end of summer. Not only do the does usually not come into a strong heat until then, but the buck also doesn't come into rut until late summer. His scent often plays a role in their coming into heat. Besides, they just had their kids! You don't want him breeding them so soon anyhow.

gained a lot of weight
......................

What you feeding him?

Our bucks before breeding are in excellent shape, their feet are trimmed they have been given a selenium injection about 4 weeks before going into the pens (or having a girl visit them) have been wormed (the only scheduled worming we do on the boys is prebreeding) have had all their vaccinations and a breeding soundness exam which once they hit 8 years old means semen under the microscope so we know they aren't shooting blanks...we expect them to before their 10th birthday. They also recive a good mineral since good sperm in older bucks comes from good nutrition. And a fat buck is a lazy buck. Vicki
