price of goat's milk
My friend is milking a couple of goats now and wants to know what the going price is for a gallon. They plan to sell it to someone to make cheese. Please indicate where you are located (state and perhaps section of the state--NY and PA would be real helpful) so I can determine if it is a comparable market area. They have a dairy breed (don't know which) and grow organically, but not certified.
Thanks in advance.

I don't know how helpful this is (since I'm in Central Florida) but the person I bought my Nubians from sells theirs for $8 a gallon and sells it all from their almost 30 goats. Their main customer makes soap out of it.

The first thing to do would be to check the Weston Price site, realmilk.com, and see if Pennsylvania allows raw milk sales at all.
Here in our very rural part of Oregon, I would be doing well to get six dollars a gallon for fresh goat milk, even though it's sold in the stores for over thirteen dollars a gallon (pasteurized, in quarts).

A lady about 50 miles from me sells it for $6.50 a quart. She's the only one I've found anywhere near here who sells goat milk. She could probably get any price she asks.

$6.00 a gallon is what we sell it for. Check some local stores and see what it goes for there? Our Wal-Mart carries it for about $4.00 a quart? I think.
South East Nebraska here.

southern Ny I sell it for $8 a gallon and the customer brings the container. No one has ever not bought it because of price. All of my customers are drinking it or making yogurt.

Well.......since it isn't legal to sell it here in Missouri, I would never do that. But IF I did I could get $5-7 a gallon.
There is a community of like minded, organic eating, homeschool folks out here who line up (I mean I suppose they would line up for it...you know, since it's not legal, I'm just supposing. ; )
We only have enough for our family to drink right now, but I have plenty of people waiting. I mean, they "would" be waiting if they "could" buy it from me.

If you get it from the health food store or Walmart here, you'll pay $4 a quart so $16 per gallon.
That's why we now have a goat

PA does allow raw milk sales with a permit. The going price I hear is $8 a gallon.

Raw milk sales are legal on the farm. The farmer must have a license from the state Department of Agriculture and Markets. The farmer must post a sign at the point of sale that states, "Notice:Raw milk sold here. Raw milk does not provide the protection of pasteurization." Raw milk vendors can only sell to consumers.

Here in North Florida, it is $8 a gallon, $3 for a 2 liter bottle. That is fresh not frozen.

My Wal-Mart Supercenter sells Mecklenburg in half-gallon cartons in the high $3 range. I want to say it's $3.78, but don't hold me to that. So those selling for $8 a gallon are competitive with Wal-Mart! $3 and $4 a gallon? Such a deal!

I haven't had any that I was willing to sell yet, but I have had a few folks ask. In my state is legal to sell off farm so long as you don't advertise (lol such a stupid rule) and they bring their own containers. I plan on selling for $2.00 a quart (or $7.00 a gallon -- a little discount, but then again, I don't really plan on selling gallons at a time since I only have two goats milking and use most of it here). That's actually below grocery store prices in our area (and the milk is WAY better than goat's milk from a store. Long ago before I ever had goats the first time I bought a quart to see if we'd like it. We almost didn't get goats because of the AWFUL taste of the storebought goats milk--thankfully we tried it anyway and found our home milk MUCH MUCH better).

$7 a gallon....like to talk to the $3 and $4 folks, you can barely get it into the fridge for that price unless you don't pay yourself any labor. Way to much work to work for free.
I am only milking 9, 12 next month, I sell all my milk, all my neighbors milk and all my business partners milk, as either milk, cheese or soap and we still don't have enough! But none of us want to milk more goats. Vicki

Here in New Mexico (northern part of the state) folks don't sell milk, but they sell shares in the goats - that avoids the whole conundrum with the legality of milk sales. The customers buy milk from their "own" animals. The share only lasts for a period of time (one milking season, etc).
The milk is $3/quart or $12/gallon for organic. I don't know of anyone selling non-organic milk.
