Fence Chargers

Does anyone have any experience with the solar fence chargers? Any recommendations or places with good prices. Right now just for two acres but coiuld add up to 10-15 hopefully someday.

This will be added to existing fences (woven) -- also open to any tips!

TIA.

We use one in the cow pasture. Read on the info and make sure it has enough output for goats. TSC has a chart in the electric fence aisle.

I asked this in my post on the other thread....but why solar if I may ask?
To get a solar that will hold goats....its going to be quite pricey.
I reccomend calling these guys to talk about what chargers will hold goats and what ones won't. Yeah, I know...I've said that a few times already!

I purchased the 6 volt solar charger here:

http://www.jefferslivestock.com/ssc/...97&dept_id=298

It works great. We had goats hollering, horses jumping, dogs yelping and cats ripping across the yard. My fence isn't real big, it's around my garden (about 50 x 70 ft - I bought this so I coudl use it for bigger fences later though.).

Nobody tramples in and eats my garden anymore.

I don't know how it would do for larger areas though.

Oh, if you do purchase that one, take into account that it takes FIVE days in the sun to charge before you can use it, unless you buy a certain charger for it.

Ok, a thought I just had. For just putting a couple strands around the inside of an existing fence to keep goats from climbing it, a charger doesn't have to be extremely strong. But you mentioned fencing in a lot more at a later date. If your planning on electric fencing the larger area, you'd be ahead to buy a strong charger now for future use on the future fence. But if not, you can get by with a lesser charge on the small area you have now. If I was going to invest in a charger for goats, I'd never buy less than an 8 *output* joule charger. There will always be goats that test...but they only test a *good* charged fence, once.

DH is big on solar and said if we did hot wire he would prefer to do solar. We don't know much about hot wire so I will need to do some reasearch before I invest in anything. It's good to know that I need I higher volatge not for area but for the "bite".

I did some looking and haven't yet found a solar charger that will put out that much. They may be out there, but I haven't found 'em yet!

Same here, I went that route once, but to keep goats in electric exclusively, the solar chargers that were capable of that, were wayyyyy beyond my budget. Thats why I now use the Taylor Fence Brute 8....wonderful charger!!

Emily, I tried to check the link but it wouldn't pull up! =(
If you don't mind me asking how much did the charger run you? I'm going to do an online search for it but sometimes you can't locate a price with the product info.

I guess since I was at work today she decided to stay in the field!

I was on there earlier today and it was fine, but now it seems to not be working. Try it again tomorrow maybe. Oh, I just got it up, took a long time but it did come up. Here is the link.
http://www.grasslandsupply.com/

My charger cost $269 and well worth every penny since the goats haven't escaped since I purchased it. Peace of mind is awesome!! It has a one year warranty and you can purchase an extended warranty if you want. My warranty ran out and I lost a charger to lightening. I was going to replace it with a new one, but they said to send it in for repairs.....the repairs and shipping combined only cost me $30. I was a happy camper.

Wow - a place with great customer service it sounds like. I will give the the website another try. Thanks for all your advice. I have been so upset this week over what to do. With her being one of my first goats I would be devestated to sell her. I think I have learned more this month then I did in the kidding process. And I am planning to wean at the end of the month when school lets out (subsitute teaching).

Even though it seems like the long way around the block, it truly works out to give the most 'bang for the buck' (pun intended!).
Relative to the solar fence charger issue, we run everything in our barn from solar. The key issue is that we have individual batteries, solar panels and an inexpensive ($49) Black and Decker inverter to convert the 12 volt battery voltage to 500 watts of 120 volts AC. This allows us to power the 8 joule fence charger, lights, dog fencing system etc.
If you consider the advantages, it suddenly makes sense to think outside of one box.

The link provided has a 25 joule charger. It is pricey.

Yes, very old thread. But...... solar chargers really don't work well for goats still. No enough zap.

I don't know! But I do know that I get frustrated when I'm involved in a thread and then realize it is 5 years old!
Updated info...The best chargers in my opinion are http://www.gallagherusa.com/

I use a solar charger from Tractor Supply for my electric netting, works fine! It was $119 made by Zareba (sp?) and it's only 1 joule, sufficient grounding is the key. It does not work well for the multiple single strand wire for the goats, for that you need more joules.
