My New Nubians

Ok I went and done it.

I just finished the purchase of 2 Nubians, a 4 yr old Doe, and her 6 month old granddaughter, from a fellow 4-H family.

They are:

Audrey (the 4 yr old doe):

My New Nubians - Goats

My New Nubians - Goats

And Lola (her grandaughter)

My New Nubians - Goats

My New Nubians - Goats

My DW thinks we may have paid to much, but Audrey ($250) has consistantly gotten Blue ribbons at our fair, and is in full milk right now ( 8-9 pds. a day, so no waiting for milk), as for Lola ($175), her mom just took Grand Champion at the fair this past Feb..

They are both ADGA registered and the papers have been handed over and I'll be having my DD's listed as the new owners this week.

So I think I got an OK deal.

P.S. I just heard thunder and it's raining (first rain in almost 2 months).

Congratulations on your new additions! They are both beautiful! Hope they won't be too noisy as some nubians tend to be. congratulations on the rain too. We desperately need some here in Ga.

Sherry, I just got them this afternoon and they are screaming everytime I go back into the house, or they see me through the back door or window.

The little one is the one that won't stop whereas the older one complains for a bit then just quites down.

They are in with my 2 meat goats (1 nubian/boer X and the otehr is a boer / something X), who are does also, so it's been fun watching the politics.

The breeder I got the Nubians from bottle raises all the kids and keeps the younger ones separate from the older goats, so Audrey (the older one) has never really meet her granddaughter until today. Then on top of that these other 2 goats are there. Since Audry out weighs everyone else by about 75-100# it's turned out to be her rules, so far.

But Betsy (the Nubian/Boer X) is desparatly trying to get the little nubian to play with her. She's jumping around, prancing, doing twirls in the air, it's a real joy to watch. To bad I've got to go to a meeting for work tomorrow, I could watch them all day otherwise.

Tomorrow is going to be fun. It's the first day we are going to milk Audrey, it should be interesting.

The other part of the deal that I really liked was that the breeder offered me free stud service with either of her current bucks (a Nubian, Lola's dad, and a LaMancha), so my oldest DD is already planning breeding Audrey this summer to the LaMancha since she wants elf ears.

I think you got your money's worth. Audrey is gorgeous. So is Lola. 8 - 9 lbs of milk a day; that's great! Enjoy your new girls. I'm sure the whole family will.

When we got our Toggenburgs I couldn't wait to milk them either! It was quite a learning experience for all of us and took about two weeks to get into a routine. Love that milk though!

I milked her this morning and I think I got it all, 1.5 qt, but I'm not sure.

She was excellent on the stand, didn't fight, kick, or scream, just a dream for a novice milker like me.

Of couse last night was something else, They screamed, and screamed, and screamed . Their quite now though, I think they lost their voices.

Well off to work (Yuck!!!).

Bob, I would expect milk production to decrease somewhat until she feels at home...

The screaming should stop, too - we had one that yelled her head off for about 2 or 3 weeks after she got to our place, but is now actually one of our quietest does.

Yeah, moving them almost *always* decreases milk production and you may not get it back until she freshens next year on your place.

I love the coloring of the blue roan one! I have one doe that is colored like that and every year I wait to see if she will give me a blue roan baby and every year - she has really nice babies, but they are always brown!! (My buck is brown.)

They are just beautiful. I love Lola's coloring. I think you got a great price on them too.

According to DW they still made a ruckus today, but only when they saw her.

They are a little off their feed today, but I'm not sure if it is because they now have grass to eat (a rare quantity around this county lately) or just that they are still upset (probably a little of both).
