There will be babies tonight!

I just got off the phone with a lady who is extremely knowledgeable about does in labor, kidding, etc. I should have kid(s) within 2 hours. ETA: Now that I think about it, I think she said that they will be born within 2 hours after hard labor starts. The water broke, she got up and walked a little, and according to the lady on the phone everything is going just like it should. She told me to call her back and she'll talk me thru any problems.

I should have known it would be tonight, we have lots of thunder and the storms will probably hit any minute. LOL

I'll post a report as soon as I have something to report. Keep your fingers crossed that my little doe will have happy kids tonight.

She's still talking softly and having soft contractions, so it'll be a while probably. Not near as quick as I was hoping. She's doing well, none of the prolapse that she was having a few days ago. She's slowly working her way up the driveway to the front door. Every time she moves she gets about 6 or 8 feet closer to the front. Since the water broke, I'm sure she'll actually have them this time. I just hope she does it soon so I won't have to set up all night again. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I'm drinking a LOT of fruit juice tonight. LOL

As long as you see progress Spinner....if her water broke (pre-bag) over 3 hrs ago you should be seeing something by now...has she progressed to pushing.

She's resting, not much pushing. Slow progress I think. The lady I talked to on the phone earlier said that as long as she's not crying in pain that everything should be progressing as it should. If she starts loud or painful crying then I can call her back and she'll talk me thru it. She gave me a list of supplies to have ready for "just in case". I hope I don't have to call and wake her up in the middle of the night.

The waiting is sooooo hard to do. I feel like I should be doing something, then I stop and remember that I'm not the one that should be doing something. All I can do is watch and wait, hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Please don't wait too long to do an internal if things do not progress.

I hope everything is going well. I have to disagree with your goat mentor on the signs of problems. It doesn't always have to be crying with pain or pushing with nothing happening for there to be a problem. Many times if there is a malpresentation of kids, the does body will tell her to stop pushing because its not right. I have had many does who broke the first water and then had just the tiniest of contractions, sometimes stopping all together. No signs of distress, many times they chew cud or eat hay during this time. If I see a prolonged slow labour, I *always* check the kid for correct presentation. Or if the water bag presents and breaks, then the contractions seem to stop. Usually that is a malpresentation and its easier on all three parties if you discover it early before the kid is completely jammed into the birth canal. If you wait because she isn't showing signs of distress, you may be faced with a totally jammed kid that you don't have enough room to manuever to get it into the right position. Bad for you, possibly fatal for the kid and/or doe.
So anyway, 99% of the malpresentations I have, the doe actually *never* yells or even acts that uncomfortable. So please don't count on that as an indicator of problems. If you do, by the time you interfere, it may be too late.
Heres wishing you have healthy kids and are catching up on your zzz's right now.

DD took over the watch at 6 AM. I did get a few zzz's, but now it's back to work.

I see some progress, a hoof is showing. Ran in to take a quick potty break and give a fast report. I'm going back out now and will tell all soon. I have a feeling the kid is too big and I'll have to do something to help her. Taking the phone out with me now.

Yes, my friend let her doe go for way too long w/o doing an internal. She lost very valuable triplet Nigerian Dwarfs, for no reason other than not going in. The first baby was malpositioned. After she called me in a panic, I told her to do an internal. She was then able to deliver the very large, dead, upside down and breech buckling. He was followed by two dead doelings. When you wait too long, the placenta separates from the uterine wall, cutting off the oxygen supply to the babies. I called Vicki McGough to ask what we could do for the doe afterwards (I got there after they had all been born, after talking my friend through birthing the buckling.) First she had to vent about folks who wait too long to do internals! She was so spitting mad that I had to walk in the other room so my friend could not hear it, as she was already feeling pretty bad about it.

FTR, not one of my does has been noisy at all in labor. Mostly I go in the barn and am surprised to find them either just finishing or in the middle of giving birth.

Don't wait more than 2 hours to do an internal. Please let us know how your girl is doing. Hopefully you'll prove our fears wrong!
Best wishes, Jill!

I sure hope you have babies by now. If you have waited this long there is going to be trouble. I had a doe that I sat in the stall with her for several hours. She wan not talking at all, and she would lay down get up and she did this over and over. I finally decided to go in and I found a HUGE doe STUCK and there is no way she could push her out. If I were you I would go in if you have not already. If your mentor is not at the house, she should be. You should never wait over about a hout , two the longest after the water breaks. Prayers going to you, for everythig to be ok. please keep us posted.

Doe's Secret Code of Honor

The doe's secret code of honor is as old as goats themselves and is ultimately the species best kept secret. No doe shall ever kid beforeits time. (Its time being determined by the following factors):
1- No kid shall be born until total chaos has been reached by all involved. Your owner's house must be a wreck, their family hungry and>desperate for clean clothes, and their social life nonexistent.
2- "Midwives" must reach the babbling fool status before you kid out. Bloodshot eyes, tangled hair and the inability to form a sentence mean the time is getting close.
3- For every bell, beeper, camera or whistle they attach to you, kidding must be delayed by at least one day for each item. If they use an audio monitor, one good yell per hour will keep things interesting.
4- If you hear the words, "She's nowhere near ready. She'll be fine while we're away for the weekend," Wait until they load the car, then begin pushing!
5- Owner stress must be at an all time high! If you are in the care of
getting close.
6- When you hear the words "I can't take it anymore!" wait at least three more days.
7 -You must keep this waiting game interesting. False alarms are mandatory! Little teasers such as looking at your stomach, pushing your food around in the bucket and then walking away from it, and nesting, are always good for a rise. Be creative and find new things to do to keep the adrenaline pumping in those who wait.
8- The honor of all goats is now in your hands. Use this time to avenge all of your barn mates. Think about your friend who had to wear that silly costume in front of those people. Hang onto that baby for another day. OH, they made him do tricks too! Three more days seems fair. Late feedings, the dreaded diet, bad haircuts, those awful wormings can also be avenged at this time.
9- If you have fulfilled all of the above and are still not sure when to have the kids, listen to the weather forecast on the radio that has been so generously provided by those who wait. Severe storm warning is what you're waiting for. In the heart of the storm jump into action! The power could go out and you could have the last laugh. You have a good chance of those who wait missing the whole thing while searching>for a flashlight that works!
10- Make the most of your interrupted nights. Beg for food each time someone comes into the barn to check you. Your barn mates will love you as the extra goodies fall their way too. Remember, this code of honor was designed to remind man of how truly special goats are. Do your best to reward those who wait with a beautiful doeling to carry on the Doe Code of Honor for the next generation of those who wait!"
