Doeling not pooping,Please help
She hasn't pooped since yesterday morning and this morning she is acting very uncomfortable. We have given her Maloxx to no avail. Is there something else we can do for her? Can you give a goat an emema? What about oil? Does it have to be mineral oil or will another oil work?

Yes, you can give a goat an enema. I have had to do it before with kids. Be very gentle, same as you do with a human baby. It won't hurt her, even if thats not what she needs. I would do it asap if she is stopped up. A kid thats not pooping is soon a dead kid.

when you say she is taking 3-4 oz/feeding...how many feedings a day is she taking? So how many total oz./day? She will actually be 3 wks. old on Sat. Did you get her pooping? does she have a temp today? Is she still on the antibiotics?

She is still on the anitbiotics, taking 3 to four oz every few hours during the day for a total of about 16 to 20 oz for the entire day. She just won't take anymore than that. Her temp is 104 today. We gave her the enema and she passed a small amount of poop but she is still crying like she is in pain.

I seem to remember someone posting that they gave their kid more than on enema before it worked.

We can give her another. We will try that and see if it helps.

She passed some gooy poop and it has some blood in it. Is that just from irritation from the enema? She is holding her head funny, kinda standing there looking up at the ceiling. Not all the time, mainly when she is standing. We are so worried about her.

what did you use for the enema? a little bit of warm water with some drops of dish washer detergent should not leat to bleeding.
i would give her 2cc vit-b complex subcutan and yoghurt in the bottle. keep her hydrated and warm. test hydration, pinch the skin. is it still elastic and snaps right back in place? what is the antibiotic for? i bet her temp is because of dehydration. antibiotic kills all good bacteria in the intestine.

Okay we gave her 20cc's sub Q fluids, and gave her the 2cc vit b complex and then we gave her more six hours later. She has perked up and ate fairly well and then wandered around and investigated a few things and then curled up comfortably and watched the goings ons. We are giving her probios two hours after each antibiotic dose to help repopulate her gut.She also peed really well.

Wow, she went after her bottle just now like crazy! I hope this means a permnant turn for the better. I know we should continue her treatment for several days, but we then we don't want to over do it. If this gets her on the right track and there aren't anymore set backs, how many days should continue to do this. Don't want to cut her short either.

Not to say this was the cure here, but I never underestimate the power of B complex. It's the one natural substance that I'd never be without and never disappoints me with sick goats.

Do you all think we should continue the pen? Or do you think the sub q fluids and B complex is enough? Just don't want to over medicate.

i would definitive continue the b-complex and the antibiotics. sc fluids only if she is not drinking and start dehydrating.
why did you start antibiotics?

We started the antibiotics becuase her temp was 106 and the info on Fias Co Farm said that high of temp is something more than dehydration and we were hearing a rattle when she breathed. We were worried that she was getting pnumonia so we started her on the antibiotics. I don't want to cut her short on them, because if that was the case, then we would just allow the infection to build up a resistance to the antibiotic.

I hope that your little girl gets better soon, I don't know what to tell you, but I'll be praying for a good outcome. Good Luck, bye.

I have used a juvenile suppository, cut in half on my kids in the past. Really easy. Stuff looks like wax. You put it in, hold it there for a few, when it comes out again, so does the poo.
Can you get LA-2000 from someone? your vet? It lasts for three days instead of giving twice a day. I personally like Bio Mycin because it is broad spect and doesn't sting like the LA-2000 but since you are already giving the Pen, continue with LA. That is if you can get it.
Glad she is doing better for you. Oh, one more thing. If the opening for the nipple is too large, they will asperate some of the milk and get a rattle.
