Triplets! Big fluid bag hanging out of mom?

Hi!!! We just had triplets! It was incredible, but I have two quick questions.

1. Mom (Kiko, FF) is up on her feet, eating, hasn't drank much water yet, but she still has a melon sized fluid bag (full) hanging from her. Is this okay? Do I do anything?

2. Kids are standing, took about 15 minutes at least, though. We're in So. Oregon, selenium deficient. I have oral Selenium E Gel on hand. Adult goat/sheep dose is 5 ml. How much should I give the kids, and do I just squirt it in the back of their mouth?

Oh 3) these kids aren't getting much colostrum yet. They are trying to find the teat, and sometimes they do, but it's just a few seconds or a minute each time, and then it's a long time before they get it again. They'll be right there, I'll even try to stick it in their mouths, but they aren't seeming to be very proficient at it yet. Will they get better????

Anything else I am forgetting??

Off to keep an eye on them and get some pictures before it gets too dark. Time of birth: abt. 4pm PDT.

PS - if the bag thing is life or death, someone please call me on my cell 541-415-0126 as I'll be out in the barn and won't get email checked for probably another 30 minutes!

Sounds like everything is normal to me...The reason they may not be sucking is because their not hungry. If It was me I would be out there every 15 minutes and watch or assist the kids until I see them are drinking. Also during your visits make a visual check to make sure she drops the fluid bag (after birth)....After that get some rest and re-visit in the AM.

What color is the fluid bag? It is probably just her placenta....if it is orangy/red colored it is the placenta. This is a picture of a whole placenta http://www.fiascofarm.com/galleries/...terbirth1.html . On the selenium gel I have no clues as I use BoSe. I wouldn't worry about the kids to much as long as they know where the teats are they should be fine. Just check in a few hours and see if they have a full belly. They won't take long sips from mom more like quick bites so don't worry if they don't nurse for long right now.

On the placenta it should be out in a few hours you can take it out or just leave it in there....they will most of the time just eat if it left in there. I prefer to take it out as mine get tummy aches from it if they eat it. Congrats on the babys!

My doe that gave birth Saturday, had a bag of fluid hanging from her before she passed the placenta. It was just the sac that the kid had been in with some amniotic fluid still inside it. It came out with the placenta.

I let her eat some of the afterbirth, and then took away the rest... this might be a "TMI" but the hormones present in the human placenta cause the uterus to contract better, putting the mother at less risk of hemmorage. I figure goats are probably the same way.

Yep - it was the afterbirth, and she ate it right up. Babies are chowing down pretty good now, although the buckling is getting sleepy after not too long. They are really cute. I will try to upload some pictures. I *think* I have two doelings and one buckling. Anyways, one has an extra tail in there and the othes have two little spots on their tummy that I'm thinking will end up being teats someday?

This is just too cool. My first birth! :baby04: I am in goaty heaven!!

LOL....even after a couple years of having kids I did have one "girl" who got the best of me...I found out a couple hours after "she" was born that my baby "girl" was in fact a BOY :baby04: . LOL....little stinker was holding up his testies on me .

Well, I went back out and double checked after reading this, and looking at the Fias Co Farm pictures, and they are two doelings and a buckling. I guess since they're Kiko's I should be wanting it the other way around, but I'm totally stoked anyways, LOL!

I posted some pictures in a new thread.
