I never seen anything like this

One of my does that just freshened (her 1st time)< Her teats are very thick and when I milked her the middle of her teats broke open or cracked one even had a hole in it and the milk is coming out of the sides. The ends of the teats are white but the rest is red.
Has anybody ever experiecned this and if so is it fixable?

Wow. I am just guessing here, but some type of severe form of mastitis?? Can you get a picture?? Does the milk look normal?? The red sounds like chapped teats but I've never seen teats chapped *that* bad! Is milk coming out the ends too?? Are her teats bleeding where they cracked??

It looks terribly infected! Does your goat have a fever? Does the milk smell/look ok? Are you bottle-feeding the babies? Do you have a good goat-vet? I sure hope so! I'm sure someone here can shed some light on this. I hope your goat gets well soon.

OH MY GOSH. I just saw something like that in a book I was looking at. I have one here at work with me but of course the wrong one. That looks really painful. I hope you can get that figured out. I would take her straight to the vet if you have on around that can help. OUCH

I once milked someone elses goat that had CAE and t hat goats udder was hard and the milk came out from the sides of the teats...sort of oozed...

I also am wondering about frostbite...

She is a first freshener right? Did her mother have mastitis? Maybe she got mastitis as a baby and it is a year along

I hope you have a good vet or a very experienced goat owner nearby

That looks an infection of some sort and she needs treatment.

Does she have a temp?

I had a goat with udder sores and had to use injected Lysigin to clear it up but have not seen necrotic teats (yet).

I think she needs a vet, sorry.

There was a post on the cattle board about gangrene mastitis (sp) that looked similar, I would definitely consult a vet!
So sorry, I hope all goes well and she gets better soon.

That looks painful and infected. Maybe gangrene mastitis. I'd get that goat to the vet ASAP. She needs antibiotics.

I vote for a vet as well. I think that is beyond anything I've experienced.

wendy maybe it is time to cut back a little bit on your zoo? this problem did not happen overnight. if you not have gone to the vet with her yet than do so ASAP.
she might loose her teat(s). it must be very very painful for her and it is hard to believe that she did let you milk her. is she still nursing her kids?

didn't you posted a while ago about hair loss with your pregnant does? was she one of them?
what mineral are you feeding your goats? on saanendoah.com is a very nice article about gangrene mastitis caused by copper deficiency. you might want to look into this as well.

I don't know how you have them penned, but if that were my goat, she would be in strict isolation as the exudant from those teats looks highly infective (to other goats and even other species). I am surprised it got so bad so quick. I would probably put her down, but that's just me....I am kinda like that. I don't have the time, energy or resources to treat an animal that is already that far along with a severe health issue, particularly with an infection that is probably already systemic.
