update on preemie

Just an update on the premature doe that I wrote about earlier this week. A lady had taken her for me and was giving her pet milk and water. I switched her to her mother's goat milk.

Today I put her in the field with her mom. The mother got very upset because the baby didn't respond to the mom talking to her (Mom is a slightly mouthy Nubian). The Mom kept standing over the baby and crying to me every time I walked out to check on them. Anyway, we got the baby to suck on mom and it looks like they are bonding. Came home tonight from choir practice and the baby was nursing on her own and mom was sniffing her and making momma goat noises.

Thanks for the help,

Harplade

Great!! Wonderful news! Very nice that momma decided to take her back, many will not after the kids have been away for any length of time. Great news!

That's wonderful! How premature was the baby? I'm glad that she's doing good though, and glad that her mama took her back. Good luck with them, bye.

Thanks, I checked on them this morning and her tummy is full and the mom has a soft bag.

I don't really know how premature-Emily could probably tell the signs of a preemie better. Her hooves were very soft, she was too weak to stand but had a good suck reflex. When she started walking after 6-8 hours, she couldn't stand straight on her hooves, like the final joint in her legs couldn't hold her straight.

The twin was extremely small-his head about the size of a smallish lemon and legs the diameter of a fat pencil.

I have not noticed much poop from the baby so I'm not sure we're totally out of the woods yet but things are looking better.

YAY!

I have never had any luck at all trying to get a rejected kid back on mama...and I have tried all the stuff suggested, no matter how weird. So glad to hear you got lucky with this one!
