Just brought my new Great Pyr puppy home!

Made a 2 day trip to southern OR to pick up my 12 week old GP bitch puppy - got home last night. Poor Holly (the pup) was terribly carsick all the way home - GP's are notoriously poor travelers. We had a section of one of the goat stalls all set up for her with a cattle panel separating her from the goats for her own safety, but the first thing she did was crawl through the panel into the stall, and bedded down next to the goats. Amazingly, they seemed very comfortable with her there (she's been with goats so she probably smells like goat/dog), and she just curled up and went to sleep. She is feeling much better this morning, and is being good as gold. I was concerned that she might try to play with the smaller goats, but so far so good. We are watching her closely, but so far I am very happy with her.

I have to put in a plug for Fir Meadow Lamanchas. I have been so impressed with Kat and her website http://lamanchas.tripod.com , her beautiful, well-cared-for animals, and her customer service. Those of you on the Yahoo Groups for goats can check her out on LaMancha Talk (she also has Toggs), and get the link to her website. She has a great section on caring for LGDs and training them properly. I was so tempted to buy more of her kids, too, but luckily for my wallet, I ddin't come with an extra crate or extra money!!! I do have a buckling from her herd, Fir Meadow Hot White Chocolate (+*B Becca's Too Hot To Handle x GCH Rocky Run QPQ Daiquiri 4*M), and I am so looking forward to breeding my LM does to him this fall. He is very correct, and he has that great LM temperament - very calm and loving. I am hoping he 'nicks' well with the gals an dgives me some superb kids next year.

You should have swung by my place! LOL! Isn't Kat great...I met her at the Dairy Goat Conferance and she was great fun to talk with. Got some herbal wormer from her and some Udder & Hand for my does udders. I hope to someday be able to go out to her place as she isn't to far from me. Maybe I can sneak a doe kid home with me .

Motherclucker, where are you located? I wanted to go to the conference, but it was on my work weekend, and I need to save those precious days off for fair time and a show or two this year. I am going to try to take a couple bucks to the Mega-Bucks Classic in Grants Pass if I can get the time off. We are just starting to get into showing outside the 4-H/County Fair shows, so I'm a little nervous. Any chance you'll be there? I would love to meet you!

We stayed the night in Yreka so dd could say she'd been to California, lol, and really enjoyed the whole Northern CA/Southern OR experience. It looks so different from our green and wet climate up here. If we go to MegaBucks, we'll definitely want to do some sightseeing in the area, especially all the museums and sites that were still closed when we came through this time.

Oh, Kat's got scads of kids right now, both bucks and does. I got to see her buckling that her 14 yo LM doe delivered a few days ago. He's huge, with lots of color. If I could justify a 3rd buck with my tiny herd, I'd have loved to have bought him. She has a little red doeling that is awesome, too - of course, she's keeping that one, darn it!

Congrats on your Pyr puppy, I brought mine home from another HTer in February, so she'll be five months old on May 6. It was a four hour drive and the poor thing DROOLED great big ropey drools all the way home, I felt so sorry for her.

My goats, thanks to my other herding type dogs, do not like dogs and though some tolerate the Pyr, most tossed their heads at her. She was a perfect angel for her first weeks with us, and slowly she is growing into her Pyr temperament . . . stubborn, food guarding, beginning to bark appropriately. I just visited Justine and brought home three babies two weeks ago, and I let them interact with the Pyr so I'll have some goats who won't snub her. She can be too rough (paws at them, trying to play) so I'm right there to correct her. But overall, Pyrs are so different than any dog I've ever had, so much more tolerant of little things.

Thanks for the link to Fir Meadows; there's some great info there that I haven't seen anywhere else. I'm hoping to bring home a Pyr puppy in about a month so I need all the info I can get.

Congrats on Holly's arrival. I can relate to the car sickness thing our girl is a car sicky that just gets worse and worse with time.

Have lots of fun with her!

Oh, goodness, Justine, I think you are closer to me than you are to Kat! I make it into Portland fairly often for one thing or another - we'll have to arrange a visit sometime. I'm always up for a visit with another breeder, and since dd homeschools and does 4-H, we call them educational field trips, lol! By any chance are you going to be at the April Fool's Market Auction at the Skamania Co Fairgrounds? We will be going there to get dd's market goat project animal(s) for this year. It's the first year our county has had meat goats in the market sale, so we are very new to raising them. Been doing dairy for a while now, but not meat.

SherryC - yes, I love the amount of info Kat has at her site. And if she doesn't have it on her site, she has great links to more info on other sites.

flannelberry - thanks! I'm really enjoying her so far.

Idahoe - I can sure relate to the ropey drool! Holly drooled big time all the way home, poor girl. I can sure see the difference in reaction between the goats that have come from herd dog homes vs the homegrowns that have only been around our old farm dog. Tessa pretty well ignores the goats - in fact, at 15, she spends more time finding a sunny patch near them to snooze than anything. Our homegrowns just ignore her right back. They are all interested in the new pup, but the herd dogged goats are more likely to shake a head at her and then keep their distance.

Congrats on the new pup! My Pyrs always travel well and very calmly. In fact, they sleep most of the time. I thought they were all like that.

And you know I'm a sucker for the earless wonders, dontcha, lol! I'd love to visit, but I'm going to be strong and not buy any more LM's until I pay off a few more bills! We are already on the hook for the Boer market sale kids, and I'm still paying for a couple horses (when did I say I wanted THREE horses?), and a few more Obers....the list goes on.

Interesting - didn't know there were many Oregonians on here.

Yeah, between WA and OR, I think there are quite a few of us. I've gone to Forest Grove a few times to buy Obers from Susan (Windbriar). Are you anywhere near her?

Oh my gosh - yes. My original two does are from her and we call her "the goat lady". I call her with every question I have -she's a great lady and has very nice goats.

She now has Nigerians as well and I would love to either get a baby from her pair or buy a doe to breed to her buck.

I live ten minutes south of her

Oh, how cool is that!! I saw her Nigerians when I was picking up my buck, doe and 2 open doelings last October from her last fall. Nice looking animals. :O). My Obers all come from her stock. I've had 2 sets of twin buck and doe kids this spring, and I couldn't be happier with them. Now the problem is figuring out which I have to sell, and which I get to keep!

Nice to "meet" you, cjb!

Wow,
I did not know that there were so many Oregonians on the goat board , I did not know anyone else on the board was from Oregon besides MotherClucker.
Nice to meet all of you .
We live outside Eugene.
Manygoatsnmore be careful when you go and visit MutherClucker, when we went to MotherCluckers to pick up a LM goat I think I would have taken home her ND couple day old doeling if she weren’t going to keep her .

Marisa

ps MotherClucker: Winnie is fine and her milk is wonderful!!

Maybe we should have our own forum - the Oregonian forum ;-)

Although, I have to say - I was born in New York city so, technically, I'm not an Oregonian. However, my wife is 5 out of 6 of my kids are (one was adopted).

LOL Marisa I am so glad Winnie is doing well . I will try tomorrow to shoot her papers off to you. I had triplets born this morning (all done with kidding for me! My mom just has one left) and it was a mess so that took up a lot of my time in which I was going to get it sent out. My little ND cross girl is growing well ...I nick named her Ladybug as she is so tiny and cute like a ladybug.

We should have a goat get together for people who are in oregon and can come. It would be fun . It would be real neat to meet all of you and talk goats.

Justine

Motherclucker, talk about close, you live really close to where I grew up (where my Mom still lives)...S. Mulino Rd, out near Mollala..what a coincidence. I didn't realize there were so many HT members in Oregon either, and goat people, to boot.

I have two goats but am not a breeder.
