Ken, firefly's answer is dead on. However I usually band at the four week mark vice 2 weeks. At four weeks there's a little more buck sack to get a hold of...

I prefer 4 weeks, less chance of retaining a testicle, and more time for urethra to develop in case the wether is to be used for a purpose other than freezer camp.

Last Fall, I banded at 6-8 weeks. I had no trouble and they were boers. I found that, at least in the two I did, they seemed to have LESS discomfort, which I didn't expect. Just my two cents, and since I have so few goats, I would defer to the big guns who've got lots and lots of goatios.

Did you use the little green bands, or did you step up a size? Personally, I've never considered waiting longer.. afraid the "sack" wouldn't fit through the opening of my banding pliers - you had no trouble? (thinking I may wait with my boer kids).

I helped someone band bucks @ 3 months old, and let me tell you that was some work. Tough time getting the old jewels through the little green bands, plus the strength of an animal that age will surprise you. Bottom line they became WETHERS eventually. Two months is an ideal age in my opinion.

so yall seem to agree fairly closely to the time of banding. as a new goat owner i am waiting for that first buckling to appear before i decide on the method of wethering. why not use the burduzzi (dang i know ive misspelled that) instead?

After having them cut for a coupl of years, then leaving them intact for "marketability" for a couple of years (and having mistake pregnancies as a result), back to cutting for a couple of years, we started banding last year. We were having someone else cut.
Last year we banded anywhere from a month of age to almost three months old. This year, my aim is 8-9 weeks of age. Need to do a number of them soon.
There's just about every breed out there somewhere. From Boer, to Dairy, to PygmyXs. I just work first one jewel then the other in. So far I haven't run into a buck too big for the little green bands. We banded close to 20 buck kids last year. It will be closer to 30+ this year.

Does it matter if you have a cheap $$ bander-thingy, or is there a particular brand that everyone likes? I know that everyone seems pretty set on a particular brand of debudding iron, so I wondered if the same went for this.

I band between one and two months old. Have banded older, but prefer not to. I simply use the regular metal banders and the little green "cheerios".
