Organizations other than ADGA?
Are there any viable alternatives to ADGA? I chose not to join them due to their pro-NAIS stance.

There is the American Goat Society (AGS) Not sure what there stance is though.
International Dairy Goat Registry (IDGR) I believe that they are anti-NAIS. I think that there were several other people on here that switched to this registry. Maybe one of them can tell you more.
The only shows around here are ADGA shows though. But if you aren't showing, not as big of a deal.

Are you planning on showing? If not, I agree that with the above poster that it shouldn't be a big deal. You could then show buyers that you could have registered them, but chose not to.

I'm not sure what AGS's stand on NAIS is as I just searched their website (which isn't very good) and can't find yes or no on it. BUT a lot of my nigerian breeder friends who are VERY anti-NAIS still register AGS and show thru them and are totally boycotting ADGA.
AGS, I DO know is a great registry to work with - very prompt, correct, helpful. I really like them.

AGS is a great purebred registry! Overall, they are opposed to NAIS.
I've read on numerous lists that many are also registering with IDGA and like them as well.
As for showing, there will be 4 shows (multi ring) here in Wisconsin/Illinois that are either AGS sanctioned or dual sanctioned. It's catching on! If you want to show, then consider putting a show on yourself!
You are not alone in boycotting ADGA, I cancelled my membership with them when they came out in favor of NAIS and apparently, so have alot of other breeders.

i think there is no registry like adga. they have a very good database for pedigree search, linear apraisals and are always very helpful. do the othere registries have that as well? i went to idga website and was very dissapointed.
i'm still an adga member and planning to be one in the future.

AGS is wonderful. If you goof on an application, instead of sending it back, they will call you and correct it over the phone. ADGA sends it back, unless you reply to their emails the day they send it, and then they still send you the paper to correct it. I register my NDs with AGS. ADGA wants me to pay more to transfer them, not doing that. The rest of our goats are ADGA registered since we do not show outside of IN and there are few if any AGS shows close enough.

Thanks for the info on AGS. I had searched their website and couldn't tell one way or the other. I also looked at IDGA but I wasn't sure about how large they were.
We're not looking to show until our son gets a few years older, but want to keep the opportunity to register our goats for sales purposes. I'm also looking for information and the opportunity to network with other goatkeepers in our area.

I would love to go with the AGS but since I breed Americans, Purebreds and Grades......they aren't a very viable option. Wish they were....

Wouldn't it be harder to sell your goat's offspring if they are not ADGA redistered, but registered with someone else?
I didn't know this about ADGA and I am vehememntly against NAIS. I haven't joined yet, I hate to give them any money now.

The only problem with not registering with ADGA is sales. There are very few people that would buy a non-ADGA registered animal. The fact that AGS doesn't register Americans is also going to be a problem. If I just had NDs, I would use AGS exclusively, but I don't.

I believe you don't have to join ADGA to register goats with ADGA. You might look into it.
I am a member. That doesn't mean I have to agree with all their politics. It's kind of like voting for a senator on only one issue. You have to look at the whole picture.

Sorry for the confusion. I've been Sherri C way back since the original Countryside forum and I'm Sherri C on every other homesteading forum where I post.
Surely the goat world is big enough for two Sherri(e)s? :baby04:

yep me too! I've been SherrieC since wayyy back on the other forum 2001. Who cares about this join date. Dairy Goats are my business venture. I've been raising them since 1995. ADGA member since 1997 I don't want my customers confused about where I stand.

Not having goats registered with ADGA has had no impact whatsoever on my sales. My goats are registered AGS and I have NEVER had even one person ask if they were registered ADGA as well.
For those in IN. if your goats are purebreeds, it is very easy and affordable to put on an AGS show. It can be done for about half the price of an ADGA show. And they are very helpful and supportive.
AGS does have a pedigree database, at least for ND's, haven't inquired about other breeds, but have to assume if they have one , they have the others.

Hopefully the difference in our signature lines will be sufficient to avoid confusion. If anyone accidentally contacts me when they really want you I'll be sure to send them your way.
BTW, I'm already working on getting my user name changed on the other goat forum so we don't run into the same issue over there.

The cost of putting on a show is not the sanction paperwork with ADGA it is the rental and insurance of the facility. ANY AGS animal can show at an ADGA show...make sure your decision is based on facts. All NATIONAL livestock regsitries...horse, pig, cattle, AGS and ADGA, the ABGA and other boer goat registries can have whatever stance they want...tied with the scrapie issue with our tattoos instead of ear tags...which is what folks wanted..you will be given up to big brother if they ask for your information, because of tracking of disease. So your only alternative really is going with one of the small private (no shows, no appraisals, no nothing) which in reality you can keep this same paperwork yourself. Will it hurt sales, no if you are not already purchasing ADGA or AGS registered stock it won't.
But I will say this, if you don't want to have anything to do with ADGA than please get all the bells and whistles of ADGA Stock, their appraisal scores, their show wins, their extended pedigrees off your websites...we pay for these programs, you use them for free and then bash ADGA? Use the programs these private programs have! Vicki
