So I'm at the vet's now ...

My doe, after three days of labor symptoms but no major contractions, and some really funky discharge, is in for a c-section. Not optimistic that any of the babies are alive but I'm trying to save the doe as a pet. Unsure why she never went into hard labor. She just sort've hung there ...

Told the vet to spay her -- she'll be a buddy for my nigerian buck, who she likes anyway. (They'll bed down together if she gets a chance.) I'm not going to try for round two of kidding on a maiden doe who has this much trouble for no real reason with round one.

Can you you guys cross your fingers for me that she comes out of this okay? She's a sweet little girl. I'd hoped to have some nice babies out of her, but I'll be happy with a live, healthy pet at this point.

I had a maiden doe with a similar problem last year. She dropped a kid, which I found dead when I went down to do chores, then acted like she was sort-of in labor for another couple of hours with no progress. I was pretty sure she had more than just the one kid so went in and felt around, wasn't sure what I was feeling (no babies in the birth canal stuck), so hauled her to the vet who pulled two healthy kids out. They were way back in, hadn't even started to approach the birth canal. I was worried about how she'd do this year, but she had triplets just fine.

In your case, though, the doe has gone so long that it may be wisest to continue your plan to have her spayed.

I'm actually kind of surprised the vet waited this long. Those symptoms were not good and prognosis for successful natural delivery very dim. Pulling for your girl and the kids to come out fine.

Well, it would have been quads. Sigh. All dead for several days, no surprise there. Vet said they were all black and white spotted like 'little holsteins' -- three bucks and a doe. I'm bummed. I had buyers lined up for pet wethers, too.

Vet said that two of the quads were absolutely enormous, and the first one in the birth canal could not possibly have been delivered normally -- he said it was so stuck he had a hard time getting it out when he did the c section. The third quad was 'very large' as well.

I'm not surprised -- the doe looked like she was at full term around two months.

She's spayed and gets to be a pet now ...

Her sister and mother are bred to the same buck. Here's hoping it's not a genetic issue ...

I am so sorry to hear the outcome of the babies, but thank the good Lurd that you took her in and did the C section. I will be praying that the doe has a full recovery. {{{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}}} from Colorado

I'm slightly worried that the vet told you that she wasn't ready yet when he visited you the other day. Oh well glad mum is ok.

Wow- how scary.
Good thing you found that vet.
I'm so sorry to hear about the quads, but focus on the mother. She'll need a lot of special attention.
Hang in there.

Me too. With the symptoms you described in your first thread, I think he should have got in there *much* earlier. Oh well, maybe he learned something. Glad you found a vet thats willing to work on goats at any rate.
I am sorry it turned out this way.

So the vet claimed at least some were alive day before yesterday and turns out they were dead for several days? In a case like this, whenever you see labor start and then nothing, plus bloody discharge IMO it's time for the vet to take action right then. Not to say it would have been a better outcome, but may have been a chance. So very sorry you lost them. They sounded beautiful.

I am so glad that you had a much better ending than it could have been. It sounds like you have a good vet there - lucky you found him.

Take good care.
