FF Doe Retained Placenta

This is my first year at kidding. I had 3 does to freshen and this is the last one. She delivered twins (1 doe & 1 buck) on Wednesday night at about 8:00 pm. She never passed the afterbirth all the way out and I contacted the vet yesterday. He had me come by and get 2 syringes of oxytocin (2 cc each) and give her one yesterday morning and one last night. When I went to bed last night she was working on passing it. Went out this morning and it was gone. She did not eat much of her feed and seems somewhat depressed. Called the vet this morning and he said to come by and get one more shot of 1cc oxytocin. What do you guys think??

Looking at her on the barm cam this morning she does not seem very interested in anything. I have her some fresh alfalfa and water in there. Do you think I should take her to the vet???

Had this happen to one of my does and even with the shots she still didnt pass it all. We took a syringe 30cc without needle and mixed up 10cc of LA200 and sterile or distilled water and would flush her. We did this for a couple of days. She does look very depressed. We only gave our doe one shot. So could be all the extra contractions trying to rid the afterbirth that has her not feeling well. Do you have any banamine? This might help her if she is in pain. Offer her some molasis warm water for energy. Do you have other goats? We let our mom out with the others after the afterbirth passes. she might be missing the herd. Just a few of my suggestions.

Thanks Sixstrothers,

Is the LA200 an antibiotic? I do think that all those cramps are making her depressed, I know it would me! Have you ever heard if you can give goats Ibuprophen? Fiasco Farm web page says you can but when I searched I saw that other sites said not to. I do not have banamine but may ask the vet for some...

Is there any chance she passed it and ate it? You said she was working on passing it last night. My does wanted to eat theirs and would have if I had not been standing there to take it away. I am new to goats so don't have any other advise on the retained issue.

I read from another post that you can give aspirin. The dose is VERY high - 10 to 13 aspirin. You can crush it and give it in a liquid bolus. The dose is so high because of their digestive tract. Anything less and you may as well not give any. Still, I would not give it very often. I dosed my 125 lb Alpine doe with 11 when she hurt her leg one evening before we could get to the vet the next day - got banamine to have on hand from now on.

So, if you knew the placenta had passed but they still had discharge like this would you assume there was a twin coming or would that just be a normal post partum presentation? I have a sheep doing the same thing and I've never had one with so much discharge.

Thanks.

Hi- I was told by our vet that oxy only worked if the cervix was still dialated. We had a doe that retained her placenta and we were givin lutalyse, we had to give her 2cc and then give it again a week later. We also gave her pen-g as an atibiotic and not la-2oo. Then we took some Today antibiotic and squirted it up in the cervix to be extra protecting against any infection. If she still has it in there I would give her lute. That is what we did and the doe is doing great today. She was a little depressed acting after that but she came through like a troopper!

How is she doing? Perhaps you can milk her some to help stimulate contractions to expel the placenta if it is retained. Lutelyse would probably work as it promotes abortions. If not better by morning, I would call the vet.
