youngest age for CD & T shot
Is 2 weeks old too young to give a CD & T shot. I know commonly it's given for the first time around 3 weeks, but I know the mom of my kids wasn't vaccinated and I'd like to start turning her outside to get some fresh air and learn how to be a goat (haha, she thinks she's people). I've never had tenus on my farm but it worries me some with her not having had any protection.

Clostridium Tetani which causes Tetanus is a common soil organism. Trust me its on your farm.
Give the little doeling a shot of Tetanus Antitoxin and turn her out for a week. THe tetanus antitoxin is good for about 2 weeks and we give it to all newborns regardless of whether mom was vaccinated. A 1500 unit vial (1 shot) costs about $2.50. Cheap insurance. Giving CD&T does not confer immediate immunity - and at 2 weeks old her immune system isn't developed enough to make use of the CD&T antigens.

My nubian is supposed to freshen within a day or two. If I give the CD@T today will it work on the unborn kids or do I need to wait till they hit the ground.

I had a yearling doe kid earlier than I expected; she'd had her shot only a day or two prior to kidding; the vet said that as long as she'd been adequately vaccinated as a kid, i.e., had her full series of inoculations, then her blood titer levels would most likely be high enough to provide protection for her kids. He intimated that the shot wouldn't do much good as it was given so close to kidding. I didn't ask why.

NOT TRUE!!!!!!!
First off the babie can get her CDT at two weeks. That is the age you give it. I give all my babies a shot at two weeks, then another one 4 weeks later.
Does HAVE to get there shot 2-6 weeks prior to kidding for it to do any good for the baay. Longer then 6 weeks, that is too far out, less then 2 weeks that is not enough time. If the moms DID NOT get there shots in that two weeks time then the babies will need three shots. 2 weeks, 4 weeks after that and again in another 4 weeks.
The baby doen snot need a Tetanus Antitoxin. Just give the baby CDT. my babies go out before they get their CDT, they need that fresh air and lots of room to run and jump and make your sides hurt from laughing.

Well, I'm just reporting what the vet said...I DID give an antitoxin shot at 4 days old when she was disbudded. AND I plan to start her regular cdtet at 3 weeks. Any other schedules folks out there follow.

Joan, I am really sorry, I was not trying to say that what you said was wrong. I am really sorry. I was really saying Not true to the less then two weeks out the baby had enough, that is not true. It doesn't matter if mom has never missed a shot, the baby will not be covered if the doe doesn't get her shot between 2-6 weeks from kidding. I am so sorry. I wish I could really type everything I think. I knew what I was saying and now that I read it like you or anyone else would, I see where you would think how I was saying that about your comment.

The immunity in a CDT lasts longer than the recommended 1 year booster schedule. In a human, immunity from a booster is 5-7 years. The reason you give a goat a yearly vaccination is simply because it's exposure to tetanus is more likely. I give my does a booster 3-4 weeks before they're due, but I routinely give kids a booster when I disbud them. It won't hurt them, trust me, I haven't had one have a reaction, and I've disbudded literally hundreds and hundreds of kids. I give them another booster (or send one home with the kids I disbud) 30 days after the first (or when I castrate the boys).

Pretty smart Vet you have there. I give the Tetanus antitoxin shot at the same day (usually second day, sometimes the first) that I dock lambs tails and tattoo ears. Giving it one the first day nelps prevent Naval Ill which is caused by Clostridium Tetani. Its also the same reason that you should dip the umbilical cord in iodine immediately upon birth. Its part of CLIP, STRIP, and DIP. The schedule for any newborn is about the same.
To quote my Vet - ITS MUCH EASIER AND MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE TO PREVENT THAN TO CURE. Those words I live by. I have never had hoof rot problems, and I still vaccinate for it anyway. 50 doses of Footvax costs me about $84.00 from COWDOCTORLADY on EBAY. Each dose costs me less than $1.70. CHEAP INSURANCE!!

Hahahaha! NO WORRIES! Isn't it funny that we can't hear each other's intonations and see facial expressions; no offense taken, I was just saying that I was just reporting the vet, not necessarily trying to sound crabby at you. I think most of the disagreements people get into on any on-line discussion occur because we aren't afforded the luxury of the 99% body language that we use to interpret communication. I love the advice I get on this board.

1-2 days isn't enough time for the body to rev up into a full response to the vaccine .
