tethering

Is tethering a calm older goat a crazy idea for grazing areas during the day.

As long as you are there to watch it while it's tethered. They can easily strangle themselves & are easy prey for roaming dogs.

We put our bucks on fence row duty during the day in the summer. We never leave them if we are going to be leaving or something. They don't seem to mind at all.

I've staked my goats out literally hundreds of times, with no problem. I watch them pretty close.

I did it for the first 5 months, and got tried of watching them every second! So I built a fence! works better, but never had a problem doing it, just don't put 1 next to each other. they will get all tied up!

If they're in a clear area that is otherwise fenced in as well it is safe. I've had 3 goats (and my friend has had a couple goats too) that lived a year or more on a tie out, never had one die or get badly tangled or hurt. Then again, I was VERY careful where the goat was placed, our yard is fully fenced, and my dogs not only scare away other dogs but stay away from tethered goats as well. It's not the best situation for goats, but it's possible.

I tethered my pygmy for a while when I wasn't home because she was escaping mysteriously. I used a retractable dog leash, I always used it on a fence line so that she could't wrap around anyting. I also used a dog harness not a collar. it worked great.

I am having to keep my smartest and most stubborn goat on a leash in the barn right now. She found out she can jump the fence while there is three feet of snow on the ground. And she won't stop doing it...

Should be in the forties all next week and even the possibility of rain!!!
