Market Weight for Boers

At what weight should the kids be ready for market? And how long to reach it based on sound genetics (rather than overfeeding)?

Hi Tango..I can only tell ya how it goes here. At three months of age..we wean and sell. They have had mommas milk and hay..grass if in season..lol. They on a average of 60-70 pounds.

The majority of the meat kids around here are bought by the Mexican population. But there is a gal that buys my saanen mix kids for I think Hindus.

To be truthful..this is the only way for me to make money on the goats. They have paid their own way and then some doing it this way.

Best of luck..the Easter market is almost upon us.

Depends on the market and even the holiday. Hispanics like a certain age and weight; Muslims have different requirements for different holidays.

Thanks ya'll. I was thinking solely of taking to a processor for the year round market. I will not sell my kids for ritual slaughter so am not interested in ethnic holiday markets. Being Cuban myself, I would never sell a live goat to a hispanic with a knife. Perhaps I can find out by calling the processing plants closest to me. So there is no target weight/ time like with market hogs?

We have a local slaughter house that serves the Muslim community. The meat is packaged and sold, so the actual "ritual" isn't done. They pay very well too. We're lucky to have them nearby.

That is great to hear Moosemaniac. It will be my first question to any plant. Glad it was brought up in this thread since I was thinking that the ritual would only be an individual act and not a whole plant method, but it has given me something to consider and discuss.

Topside1 thanks for that information! Thompson Station is presently the closest processor. I was going to look for hteir phone today . A neighbor has some goats ready to go for the easter market. I don't have any right now but wanted to see where they were and go visit.

Well that's a surprise. I was told by the person I met at the coop last week that it was a processor. I live 30 minutes from a pretty good auction house. Will et my neighbor's know abiout this, I appreciate the link. As for me and my kids, we'll wait until the Huntsville processor opens I'spose. Have all but one buck kid sold this time around anyway. Thank goodness
