Hubby embarassed over my goats.....

I ran into my husbands aunt at the store and ask her about rasing goats because I had been told that they used to have goats. My husband was upset when his aunt called because he was afraid that she had told his mother I guess thats what happens when you marry into city folks.

You mean to say your inlaws don't know you have goats? Hey, goats are easier to get along with than most inlaws. Most of the city people I know think goats are cool My mother in law likes them too.

I've run across LOTS of people that think goats are gross, disgusting, and eat anything. Basically a poverty level animal that only "off" people own. Heck, even my mom and stepdad laughed at me when I got the first goat. Laughed even harder when I said I was gonna raise one for butcher, and yet again when I got into milking them. And yes, they've all had to sample the milk and meat and my mom took me serious when I asked for soaping stuff for X-mas and I got lots of goodies, and she's thrilled with the soap I've given her!

I like being one of those crazy goat people! hehe

My parents have just about had a cow (to paraphrase Bart Simpson) about the twists and turns in my life. At this point (age 47) my husband, 3 children and I live in what I refer to as the pseudo-country---it used to really be the country until Nashville grew and grew and people started moving to neigboring counties. I now live in one of those neighboring counties (which is quikly becoming too crowded) and much to my mom's dismay, we own 3 dairy does (all pregnant), 16 chickens, a rooster that I adore, 2 wethers and a slightly smelly buck. Last year we raised up 2 pigs--yum.

My mom came from good German stock and fled the small Ohio town in which she was raised right after nursing school. My grandparents and their parents had big gardens, occasional lifestock, etc. My sisters are a bit surprised, but my in-laws could not care less. My husband's sister runs a farm at Rutgers so they understand the animal side of the world despite living the "good life" in coastal CA.

Some days it seems everyone I know thinks I'm nuts except my secretary -- she'd from a farm in KY and loves my chickens' "real eggs." oh well--I don;t really care what anyone thinks at this stage of my life-I wish I had more land and more animals and more time to devote to a lifestyle that I enjoy.

I've met those people. Can't help but pity them for thier ignorance, huh? Usually, they're the same people that think that brown eggs are better for you because the white ones go through some sort of bleaching process...

LOL my husband is the same way. He tries to pretend that we are in the suburbs and he refuses to tell anyone that we have goats. He is embarassed by the number of house pets we have as well. I am an animal lover and since I take care of them and etc he cannot talk.
Christmas '05 they had the office party at my home and had me do all the cooking. They wanted to do the same this year but my husband did not want them finding out we have goats. I gladly let Christmas pass without cooking for them all again. Then I went into his office one day and informed them all about our goats by telling them how my husband actually HELPED me but holding the stinky buck while I gave him a shot.
I have found that more people like goats when I tell them, than not. I see more digust towards sheep than goats.

I don't know about Wild but I had thought of trading mine for a younger model with more money.... but I have this one trained pretty well. Does dishes, takes out trash and puts the seat and the lid down and has learned not to ask about anything to do with animals because he won't win!

No one in our family farms but us. Quite a few of them roll their eyes with each new animal we get,,,but it's funny how the first thing they want to do when they come visit is go see all the animals,,lol. They can't stand hearing about slaughtering, but when we have a bbq they're lining up for that fresh pork roast. Our family is now use to us being the "weird" ones of the group. We love our life, that's all that matters.

You have to wonder where some folks think that tightly wrapped and packaged meat, eggs and milk comes from? There's no shame in being self sufficient and able to provide for yourselves and enjoying it.

I figure if others are prouder to eat all those chemicals, hormones and what ever else they can have at it, I'm not going to change their minds. After all if everyone wanted to live in the country and raise goats it'd be too darn crowded!

You can contently laugh to yourself for your wisdom and their unfounded disaproval.

Gee, I guess I'll have to relinquish my crown for being 'weird' because we have goats. My sister & BIL who just retired and moved to Florida in "yuppie-ville for seniors on a golf course" just can't understand WHY anyone would want goats and chickens. It's nice to be associated with all the 'weird' people here who love their goats like we do!
