help please

First time freshner gave birth to one. It has been 2 hours and no after birth and no second baby. Momma seems to be happy. Baby is healthy, Mommy is eating and drinking. Is there a problem that there is no after birth? How long between babies? Just in case there is second one. My husband is out in the barn and he asked me to write for opinons. I have a hard time being out there during labor....thanks for any info. JoAnn

To bounce her and see if shes got more stand to the side of her near her butt facing the back of her head, wrap your arms around her and put your hands on the sides of her belly near the bottom and give her the Heimlich maneuver. (thats the best I can describe it) if there are more you will be able to feel its legs, they're hard. If shes empty you wont feel anything hard, it'll just be soft. This morning was the first time I used it, and it works!!!

btw...I would NEVER have gone in if I didn't KNOW there were more kids. I dont want to take anymore of a chance on giving my does an infection that could kill them than absolutely necessary.

If your doe seems happy, content, theres a good chance she passed the afterbirth and ate it already. My goats are FAST about that if I'm not there to catch it. (And we always let our cows eat it, it doesnt hurt them at all I'm just a person and it's gross to me because I'm not a goat. Not my custom to EAT afterbirth, but like I said...I'm not a goat.)

Good Luck!!!

She could only have a single kid and should pass the afterbirth within 24 hrs. Sounds normal sofar to me.

Thanks for all the help we (I tell him what to do and he does it) gave her the heimlich maneuver, my husband thought she just felt fat. Then the baby started sucking and plop she had her after birth....no second baby I guess. She must be just over weight. We always call her Miss Piggy. But thank you so much for people just being there to help with question. I think I am just not a farmers wife, when she was in labor I just wanted to sit and cry I felt so sorry for her. thanks again, JoAnn

CONGRADULATIONS!!!!! Is it a boy or a girl ??? (pink chocolate cigars or baby blue???) grin. Chocolate cigars all around!!! grin.

Whenever we let our goats free range on all the pasture they want, they look fat. When Chocolate has had all the pasture she wants, she looks like she's about to kid, with that huge spare tire belly and everything. Your goat might be fat, or she might just be "well fibered". giggle.

Pictures??? Yes???

I've given up and now always wear cargo pants with the digy camera stuck in the lower pocket. That way I never have to run and look for the darn thing!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Congrats!!! Glad all went well. Easy to feel sorry for them isn't it. I know she is happy now though!

Bumping the mom did not make the afterbirth pass. When the kid started nursing it caused oxytocin to cause uterine contractions which made her expell the afterbirth.

Yes, this is so. Thats why even with my dairy does that I pull the kids from mom at birth, I milk the doe as soon as she kids. It is important in getting her to pass the afterbirth. Congrats on a healthy kid and doe.

Nod Nod. Bouncing is just to see if there are any more kids inside. No reason to stick your hand inside just to see if there are more kids when you can "bounce" the doe.
