Selling buckling question

My neighbor & I (we are sort of raising our goats together) are planning on selling all of this years bucklings. Usually we wether them all & they bring $35-50 at the sale barn at 2 months. These are really nice nubian bucklings. They are not papered but as far as we can tell are 100% or just about 100% nubian. Is there a way to market them as bucklings. We have one of the dad's boys as part of our breeding herd. He is perfect.

How would you market them? Is there a good place to list them online? We will also have a few doelings, but ran heavy to bucklings this year.

Thanks.

Maybe run a add in your local paper listing what you have for sale. I've left my business card on the bulletin board at the auction barn where I sell my goats and have had good luck that way. Good Luck

Put ads in your local papers, see if there are any internet free ads in your area. You could also put a flyer up at your local feed stores.

Good luck on selling them.

I hate to be discouraging, but I know breeders who have been breeding goats for 20 + years and raise nationally recognized nubians, and have records to back everything up. Look at Vicki's 'soaking wet buckling' sale. Think of all the years spent buying stock, showing, milk records, disease and genetic testing, etc - THAT'S what brings more money in the sale of bucklings, and the profit really isn't that high as it looks, because those breeders DO pay all those other fees for years and years establishing their herd name.

I doubt that you will be able to get much more than you would at the sale barn.

My only thought would be to try and sell to 4-h people for a bit more. Certain ethnic groups only want intact males to process for meat - they could be a niche market. Unless you are only wanting to sell as breeding animals - which is kind of how I interpreted your question.

My soaking wet buckling sale is what it is, bucks out of first fresheners so we can keep more doelings and sell more milk, it also has many many benefits for our herd and the people buying these bucks.

But do make sure you don't mislead folks with the "look 100% nubian", be honest they are nice unregistered bucklings. There are plenty of folks who buy bucks, they don't have any interest in papers. You have to make a name for yourself, it's more than just selling stock, it's selling your reputation. I know alot of my sales are because of the aftercare we give on the phone, on email and on my forum, almost 100 years of goating experience on it. Folks are sick of buying stock and then not getting a phone call returned. Folks are sick of buying sick stock. Folks want some sort of infomration on their bucks dam, how much does she milk, how many kids does she have, and when you can show them his dam, his sire, his sisters, his aunts, they get to milk to does...it's why we have good sales each year.

But do think outside the box, I sell few if any animals into my local area. Vicki
