Hoof rot

My goats have had ongoing bouts of hoof rot now for over three months. We treat their hooves but it just comes back. I read that the ?bacteria? live in the soil for 2-3 weeks but, given our current set-up, can't put them anywhere else right now. Is there anything I can treat the soil with? Or will the ?bacteria? die in the freezing temperatures? Side note- the goats winter enclosure has a dirt floor.

You could through a bunch of pulverized limestone around to dry things up. a 40 lb bag is only about $1.75 or so.

I give a shot of antibotics for a couple of days, and it clears right up, usually never to return. A old farmer told me this trick one time at a feed store. I was buying the copper sulfate foot treatment.

Mindy, try Coppertox (sp) on the troubled hoof. Clean hoof, bath hoof in bleach/liquid soap and water solution. Inspect hoof and identify infected area, douse hoof twice a day for minimum of two days with Coppertox. I had a very small battle this year and this sure worked for me. Once treated I never had a re-occurance.

There is a vaccination called Footvax for sheep that helps prevent it. Don't know about goats.

I ggogled it and it is availabale for goats. Don't know the dosage. Cost for 50 sheep injections is $104.00 through my local Teactor Supply. It may not totally prevent but every little bit helps.
