An update on my wimpy yet fancy lamancha question- pics
I came across some photos of the lamanchas I am looking into getting. They are show/dairy stock, and are "modern lamanchas" if that means anything.
My concern was that they were a little wimpy looking, seeing that they will be moving into the mountains for serious winters, not in a heated barn as they are at the breeders. Well here's come pics!
I was convinced a goat was a goat....but check out the pic! They are....really beautiful!

1- jr doe winner
2- sr doe winner
Have they been shaved? May be a dumb question, but goats around here look like mountain goats, nothing like these girls.

Yes, they were shaved.
My LaManchas do well in bitter cold. Plenty of good hay will keep their rumens pumping out heat for them.
I have found that the Alpines and the Nigerian Dwarfs do the best in our harsh climate.
Beautiful girls, mountaineer, enjoy them!

Nice looking girls.
So you decided to get them Eh.
As for being able to survive in our beautiful weather up here
yes they can there is a Lamancha breeder in northern MB that raises them and thry do fine.
Just have to make sure they have a nice draft free bedded houseing and good feed.
So did you find them in BC or are you getting them from the states.

They are in BC, only catch is the wait, they will be 2 months to finish kidding till available. Will be getting an older cull (still young, it is a tiny herd that is culled hard), and a doeling, hopefully her own to help smooth me into a milking schedule.

One advantage to LM's is that they don't have big ears to suffer frostbite. I'm getting one/some in June - won't know what they are until they are born, promised to take whatever the doe has. I'm so excited!!
I currently have 4 Nigerians, with two does settled.

Those are beautiful Lamanchas and not wimpy at all. they HAVE been shaved and if you allow their hair to grow out for next winter, they will look quite different. Mine are quite fluffly and fuzzy and I am down here in texas!
My Lamanchas are "old-style", short and squatty...the ones you show pictured are long and leggy and more 'sporty"...I think that is what is meant by modern.
I like the old style myself because, well, I'm old style ....I'm not short and squatty, just old and maybe not so sporty anymore.
Glad you have chosen Lamanchas....they are endearing and personable and quiet...and the milk like real troupers! Also, the butterfat in their milk ranks real close up there to Nubians.
Here are some pics of two first fresheners from last year that i was trying to dry up. I hadn't milked them out in several weeks, they just didn't want to dry up. The darker doe REALLY didn't want to dry up. Both are due to kid again. I am anxious to see how much they milk as they both milked well over a gallon a day the first lactation. They are also bred to my new buck, kelton.

Beautiful does, congrats on moving to the Lamancha world!
Diane, If that red doe turns up missing, don't bother coming up to Wisconsin to find her, hehehe. I like the old style too, they may not be as "elegant", but they are hardy and not over grown giants like some moderns are and they have that gentle lamancha temperment. Like the fringe butt gal too, nice girls!

I live in Montana and have a La Mancha doe. My friends have some as well. They do just fine in the foothills of the Rockies in the winter. We don't clip our does as short for show here. I usually use a 5 blade on the bodies and we don't usually clip after the first week of August so their hair gets a chance to grow back in before the cold weather starts.

Thanks, but those udders are basically dry...when those girls are in milk, they WADDLE with those udders being at least 2-3 times that big and all balooned out. I can't wait to start milking again! We only have a few gallons of frozen milk left!

My impression of lamanchas has been a very good one. Every where we went to look at goats, it was always a lamancha that was the friendly one, rubbing on you, following you around, etc. My grandpa's lamancha, out of the 3 goats we had kid, did the best, no problems and an excellent mother right from the start. Very protective and attentive to her kids. Frankly the only reason I don't want them is a very shallow one, I like ears. Nubian ears especially.
