Post Never Learn!!

Some people never learn.. Now what do I mean about this is this.. Someone called me up this morn on the phone at 2am asking me questions about what has happened to their daughter goat. It had died suddenly. I asked them how did the goat act an they said it was foaming out of it mouth an looked like a air filled balloon. The first thing that hit my mind was bloat an then the next thing was posion plants. I asked did their daughter have any poisonous plants near by an they could could not answer that question. I told them sounded more like to me it was bloat because of looking like a balloon. I asked what did his daughter feed the goats and they couldn't even answer that question. I ask them did the goats have shots no answer to that either. That just me up when people think you can get a goat and just throw them out in the fields and not care for them. I ask lots of questions and they couldn't answer none of them. I told them on the phone first off goats can not just be thrown out in the fields an not be cared for. Goats can't just eat anything ither. Then I said please tell you daughter to contact me an by e-mail so we can set up a meeting on how to care of the goats. I sent out a e-mail to his daughter asking questions. So now waiting to hear back from her.
So maybe I can help her with her goats an also help her learn how to care for them.

Sorry for venting just had to get this off my chest..

I understand how you feel. a lot of people still think that goats can live on little to nothing. I question newbies when they ask about buying a goat or goats. It starts with, do you have a shelter? a fenced pasture? Do you understand that goats need clean water, hay(esp in the winter), immunizations?, hoof trimming? If they tell me no to the shelter and fenced area, I refuse to sell to them. If they say no to the other, I try to give them information and reccomendations. It does not matter what breed of goat, they all have the basic needs to be filled by the owners.
I sold one doe to friends who did not have a fenced pasture or even a pen. They staked her out but promised to watch her closely. One day they all went somewhere and when they got back she had hung herself. Never again...

Oh Allwolf, I'd have been biting my tongue too, poor little goat! I'm brand spanking new to having goats, but why oh why do people get an animal without knowing even it's basic needs and common problems? (need a smiley with steam coming out it's ears!)

I hope she gets back to you, so she can learn how to do it properly the next time around. Too bad she didn't take the time for the first one.

I, too, cannot understand why people don't do the research before they get an animal. Look at the shelters, full of dogs that became fashionable (saw it on TV, gotta have it!), but didn't fit the lifestyle of the owners.

Why not invite the daughter and a parent over to your place to show them how you do things?? New goat owners need lots of visuals along with verbal instructions. Then they can ask questions as they occur. You would get the good feeling of helping a young person to start out right, and who doesn't LOVE to show off their goaties??

That is a good thing to do... I know with me tryin' to find the time to just get a bite to take a deep breath is hard these days. I got the rescue goin' on and the farm too, then tryin' to do my own home thing..whewwwww then to bring someone over and fit that into my schedule hmmmm... some of us with farms stay busy and may not have time for that :1pig: Allwolf, is that good for you?? I wish ya luck if ya do.

I agree, some people!

But then some people really want to learn, like someone I just sold a mini donkey too, and she decided to get two nigerian does for pets as well and she wants EVERYTHING written down, what to give, when, how to do it, etc. That's just excellent!

Well got another phone call tonight but it was from the father again. He is a nice guy but I found out that his daughter lives a long way from here. I asked him where she lived because I said she was welcome to come over and see what all types of meds I have for my goats alone with showing them off plus telling her how to care for them but she can't come up here because she works 10 hours a day and she lives about 12 hrs or more drive from here so I told him Darn it wished was closer. He said for me to get on yahoo to chat with her and to help her. Gosh I need to get my long distance back on.. While I had him on the phone I asked him has he talked to her today and he said nope I asked him somemore questions about her goats and he said she bought her goats from a breeder down the road from her but the breeder never told her what she needed to do. Never told her that she meds incase one got sick. Never told her to give shots or anything. I also ask him did she feed hay and the answer was NO. At least he knows a little about the goats but not much. He said since she lived so far away he has never seen them and told me she is getting more and I said she needs to learn how to take care of them before purchasing more and he agree with me on that. I sure hope she gets with me on yahoo soon and we can talk that way. She needs help badly to learn how to take care of her goats. Don't know a thing about goats is bad. She is a city gal and don't know JS about them. She needs to purchase some books, get on the internet to read about their care plus go back to the breeder and ask them questions on how to take care of the goats plus what all she needs to keep on hand. Gosh I really hope I can help this person out with their goats soon before purchasing more.

If not I will feel bad in someways.

If she has email, she has the internet.

Why not direct her to this site, and to Fias Co. Farms, and etc.?

Amen to that! This and Fias Co farm have been the most wonderful places for me as a newbie. If she has internet, she can find information on how to take care of her animals. Sounds like her dad is talking to her and she knows there are problems. Please don't feel bad if she does not get ahold of you. You can only help as much as she lets you. I hope she does.

When I get to chat with her I will tell her about this forum but I'm not 100% sure she will get on here because she works over 12hours a day and doesn't get online much but I just hope I can help her. Only thing now just have to wait and see.

First thing I would have asked is why are they calling me at 2am if the goat is already dead?

Cool

How they knew we was up at that time is because of talking on radio to some pals of ours. Plus long distance is cheaper early in the morns. I just can't turn someone away if needing help. Guess to soft hearted need to learn to be a real itch sometimes but just can't. I will bend over backwards to help someone as long as they do not go lieing on me or backstab me. I hope all that came out right.

I'm wondering why she even has goats if she is gone working for half the hours of the day? What joy will she get from them, or friendship with them? How would she begin to take any sort of care of them even if she knew what to do?

I want to get a couple of sheep and a horse, but I'm spending months thinking and waiting to be sure and to be sure of where and how to keep them. I don't want to get them and then find them just another chore, I want to get them because I truly want them and will enjoy them. Otherwise, I might as well play computer games.

Animals are just too much work if you don't enjoy being with them! I would figure that each type (sheep, horse, dogs, ducks, etc.) are going to take a certain amount of time just to care for every day, then I want to have more time to hang out with them, etc. How could I have a horse and not spend a couple of hours a day on most days wanting to do stuff with it? Or to watch the sheep? Or enjoy the silly ducks? I quit breeding show dogs because I was burned out and it wasn't enjoyable any more and I'm SO glad!

Anyway, I hope that she is willing to learn about her goats and to spend a bit of her time taking care of them. I'm sure it would be better for her than a lot of other things she does.
