BABIES!!! pics and a problem/question

I'm soooooo excited to announce that My pygmy girls each had their first kids and both had twins!
problem-free births, Daffodil had 2 Doelings yesterday morning, Daisy had 2 bucklings today! Both first time mothers are doing great!

BEAUTIFUL babies! we are just sooo excited! these are the first kids for My girls and for my family.

well.... my problem/question.....
One of the buckings hind leg is messed up.
the knee joint bends fine the way it should, but it also completely hyper extends.. half of the time it bends right, the other half its bending backwards.
it doesn't seem to cause him pain, and it does not wobble sideways at all like a break, just back and forth both ways.

he was born about noon today, so he's still a little wobbly anyway.

do you think that maybe he was just positioned wrong before birth and it might be ok? should I splint it?

I really haven't gotten to mess with it much, I will in the morning after they acclimate and mom does too.

any ideas?? Help!

I'd watch it for a day or two and splint it if it doesn't seem to be correcting, or is getting worse.

I've had a couple of kids born like that - the first year I had goats. They grew out of it within a couple of days. They are kind of soft from being all folded up inside the uterus and those joints aren't used to being used yet. Not sure if it is related to needing BoSe or not, but I do know that deficiency can cause joint issues.

I wrap the leg, I don't want it hyper extending it can ruin the ligiments. Use soft pipe insulation you attach with vet wrap, or any dressing your have that this firm enough so it bends the correct way but does not let it hyper extend. Cute babies. Vicki

ok, I brought him in and from what I can feel, it doesn't feel broken.

I did splint it into the correct position.
he wasn't too happy! lol now he is trying to walk w/ it but keeps trying to walk on the top of his hoof instead of the bottom... we'll see how he's doing w/ it by morning.

did I mention that he is very active, eating well, and trying his darndest to get around as well as his brother? He is really just annoyed by the leg slowing him down and making it harder to get around. I am so glad he isnt in pain. I don't handle that well

will keep you posted.

thanks!

Walking on the top or toe of the hoof is actually quite common. Usually nothing to worry about and the kid will stop doing this within a day or two. Congrats on some really colorful pygmy kids!

so far so good. He isn't happy bout the splint, but is eating and getting around pretty good.
the girls are getting so playful! they are only 3 days old and already head butting each other and trying to jump, tho usually they forget to jump w/ both the front feet and back lol just the back goes and they fly .

is there ANYTHING cuter than baby goats????

so cute

More babies born! yaayyy! So cute too, aren't they all!!
I just wanted to offer that I have had kids born like that also and they are just all couped up inside mama that sometimes that does happen, but tend to overcome it in a couple days. I have never splinted any. How is he doing?? Have you tried taking the splint off and seeing if it seems better??

One of my September kids had that(one I lost from wierd brain degenerative thing-not polio)...it cleared up within a week. Wrapped it in vet wrap for three days-just loose ligaments. I've seen it in pasterns too. Just crowded inside mom.

If I see a wobbly leg, I splint with foam pipe or just vet wrap, and give a BoSE injection too. They're pretty common and "firm up" in a day or two.
