auction kid sick

Yesterday I went to the goat auction. It was a large auction and alot of goats where run through
A boar nanny gave birth at at the auction house. She had twin does. My friend and I felt sorry for her as they sent her babies through without her. So to make a long story short we bought the nanny and the kids.
The nanny is doing fine and so is one of the kids ,but the other has the scours. Nasty smelling yellow water. I have them all together in a stall in the barn. The sick one is still nursing and as of now still seeming bright. I have given her fluids under the skin and Bio-sol and kaopectate.
Is there anything eles I should be doing?

Some do poo like that when they are first born-- think they get more colosturm and it runs right threw them. If it is acting healthy- I bet it is.

We have 3 auction houses in our area. 2 are good to the animals one is criminal in its treatment of the animals that go through there. I have seen them beat an animal to death in the ring. I will buy some animals there as rescues. We NEVER run any animals through there.

Cheers

Bob

I have brought day old doelings to the auction and gotten more money for them then the 4 month olds were getting. Of course it depends on how much someone wants to bottlefeed those cute little things. That was probably what they were thinking.

I also wouldn't let the kid touch any part of the place or any person in case I had to bid on it myself if the price didn't go high enough. (the old farmers were no longer laughing at me when I left.)

How are they doing? All three.

I would guess that the mom never received her CDT shot so at 2 weeks they need a 2CC shot of CD&T, then another one 4 weeks from that and then another 4 week. If you have Nutra Drench, I would give then some and offer mom some Moleasses water (warm). I offer it to my moms for as long as they want it, twice a day.
God bless you for taking all three of them. It is amazing what those places will do for a buck, ($).

Keep them separate from all your other livestock. I'm wondering who'd send a goat ready to give birth to the auction. I don't buy goats/sheep from the auction, no matter how cute they are, because I worry about CL and CAE - someone who has found it in their herd will often dump their entire stock of animals at the auction, regardless of their "time".

Thanks everyone for the input. I will vaccinate them . I am keeping them away from all my animals, and washing up in-between.
Mom , is doing great for a girl her age. Her teeth are old and loose she is 9 if she is a day. The kids are doing o.k. scours are gone on the first kid to get sick and starting on the other one. I think this may have a happy ending.
The auction had lots and lots of pregnant does. most sold in lots of 8 or more. Lots of bottle babies ,goats ,lambs and pigs. It seems common for meat herds to send in pregnant does, they bring in more money. They called them "package deals."
I also worry about cl and cae. These girls won't be with my dairy herd. I guess they are the start of my meat herd. If they come down with something that is a threat to my herd I would have them put down. Even as sad as that would be.
But all in all I think (knock on wood) that this may be a good ending.

Has anyone ever turned them in to a Humane Officer? I'd be taking pictures!

Good luck with them Meggie! I've got a rescue doe and her buck kid. She's put on weight beautifully (finally). The little guy is growing like a tree! She's a high percentage Boer, and he's even higher. I'll never see papers, but I don't care. They've become wonderful additions to my herd, and I'm sure yours will too!

It's great that you were willing to rescue the goat family. I don't know what they were thinking, sending the newborns through separate from their dam. They needed the colostrum. I'd get mom blood tested for CL and CAE right away. Don't forget to worm and delouse her as well.
