Another new doeling...question about afterbirth

We had ANOTHER one of our NDG does give birth today to triplets. Two bucklings were stillborn and one doeling is doing "so far, so good".

Anyway, she started delivering the afterbirth at about 3pm. She still has that bag of waters hanging from her (6:32pm now). From what I have read, it can take up to 24 hours. Is that true of all goats, even Nigerians? When does it start to be an emergency situation? I am a little nervous because of the dead kids and want to take whatever precautions neccessary. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance to all of you who are always there for us when we have questions or are in a bind! I don't post often anymore but I love having this wonderful resource for tons of real life information!

I do Nigies as well. If you wake up tommorrow and its still there, call a vet, but otherwise I think she will be okay. Were you there for the still births, did you try to assist or did you find them after-the-fact? Were the stillborns intact? If so then you shouldnt worry too much about infection. Watch four your nanies personality to change, or a foul odor before you get too upset. Just my two cents, hope it helps.

if there was any indication that the still born kids were decaying I would start her on antibiotics. Pen G for 5 days (must be 5 days in a row, if you miss one day you have to start over) about 3ccs.

And if you assisted in the birth you need to start her on antibiotics. you don't want to wait till she starts fealing down or showing signs of a uterin infection - harder to treat at that point.

I would be concerned, because you have two sexes of kids, 3 kids and only one placenta. There is usually a placenta in each horn, so there should be two placentas. Totally agree that if the kids were anything more than stillborn, decaying, than yes I would also give antibiotics. A hanging placenta is not retained, although in this situation may well be blocking the escaping of another placenta. If it's not out by morning go to the vet or have someone out who can help you detach the cyclons, the cervic has to be open to use oxytocin, hopefuly the placenta is keeping it open, I don't even begin to start dealing with a hanging placenta until 24 hours, now a real retained one inside the cervic, I deal with straight away.

Is this a bag of waters or a hanging placenta? IF this is a bag of waters you may have a quad up in the horn where the doeling came out of, hence the reason the bag of waters (bubble) is hanging and not a placenta yet. Any chance you missed a placenta? Do you feel comfortable going up and seeing what is what? Vicki

Thank you all for your insight. I woke up this morning and it was still hanging (thanks for the correction - it was the placenta, not bag of waters). We called the vet and were fixin' to go to him. But dh went out there with some warm water and as soon as she put her nose in it, she had another contraction and passed the afterbirth. YAAAA!
We did not assist with the births, we only watched. The bucklings came out in good condition (no decay) but with about 3 very shallow breathes, they died within about 60 seconds.
I bounced her last night and she is done (no more kids in there), gave mom and baby some Nutri-Drench, and expressed some colostrum to interest the baby (we have not seen her nurse). The baby was not interested in her teat or the bottle, so we hoped she has already nursed. I went out there this morning and she was nursing! YAAAA!
In regards to the other placentas, she passed those and ate them. Dh saw her eat two out of the three.
I think that we are going to start her on some Pen just as a precautionary measure since she held onto the placenta for so long plus the two stillborns.
Thank you so much!!!!

wonderful news! Give her some warm mollases water as well, that will help her sugar levels. I just mix it till about 1 quart is medium brown in color (not sure the amount I use - 1/4 cup???)

congratulations on the baby. how is she doing now?
I give my does Molasses water twice a day for about 5-7 days, or until they don't want it. The warm water is great becasue they always seem to have them in the really cold times.

I agree with the molassas water, but not with the pen. I wouldnt give the pennicillan, that birth sounds normal to me. The pen can really mess with her gut.
just my 2 cents
