Giving medicine

I have a goat with a bit of a cough. No temp. She has had this for a while and I posted about this a while back. I read that you can give them cough medicine. Do I just put it in a dropper and put it into the back of there mouth? Is there a special way to give oral drugs to goats? Thanks

If there's no temp, and there's nothing else wrong with the doe, I wouldn't do anything. I've never heard that you can give cough meds.

I wouldn't give medication in the absence of other symptoms or a definite diagnosis. I have a doe with allergies and I do dose her periodically with children's benadryl at the same dosage by weight as a child. To give liquid medications orally, I use a syringe with the needle removed. I keep a variety of larger gauge syringes for this purpose. It's a handy way to hydrate a goat who isn't drinking enough.

You might try worming her with a wormer that kills lungworms.

Yes, there is. In drenching goats- be sure and keep the nose below the eyes.Don't crank their head straight up and pour or squirt the meds. down the throat. You run the risk of them aspirating the liquid into their lungs. They will fight you a LOT less by keeping the nose below the eyes and putting the meds. by syringe into the corner of the mouth and squirting it in.

I agree with Laura...worming for lungworms may be in order.

I've had a couple goats come down with a cough after
being shipped to me. No other symptoms.
Normal stool, eating and drinking fine. No temp.
Slight clear nasal discharge.
Just a cough. I'm treating with bio mycin and vit B complex
shots every other day for 3 doses.
Maybe that's over doing it but I have to many goats
to take a chance and have a whole herd down with something.

Does your goat have any nasal discharge?
Did cough start after a transport, breeding or show?
Hope all goes well with your goat.
