This this a full bred of some type?

My mom and dad have several goats - they've never purchased a "full bred" goat, so most are mixed. The one male they have they got from my cousin - her dogs had chewed him up pretty bad So my parents took him and nursed him back to health. My cousin got him free from someone. At any rate, he has a tag in his ear and my mom thinks he is a full bred of some type. Does anyone know what breed this goat might be? He's VERY friendly.

there are ALL kind of ear tags and with out seeing the tag i cant tell what it might be fore but this is not a pure bred goat,
its a Boer mix of some sort, might be Boer Nubian or something else, but not a pure bred sorry

Don't be sorry! It doesn't matter one bit to my parents, I was just interested because of the ear tag. He's a really big goat - much larger than the others. He has such a sweet disposition I thought if he was a pure bred I might look into it when I get goats of my own. I want females that are milkers, and are sweet.

The eartag is really small. Looks like a rectangular metal think. It's in the middle of his ear - but it's so small it doesn't show up in the pics.

Oh - and here's a baby my parents have. She's a mix. The mom died shortly after giving birth. Really cute and really sweet. They named her Precious.

vets use mettle tags to identify goats that have been checked out sometimes, i cant remimber what it was for but when i bought some Boer Spannish cross nannys at a Club Sale back in Kansas the vet that did their helth papers put small mettel tags in their ears looked like small mettal bar'ret clips for goat ears lol

Yes! That's what it looks like - a very tiny barrette! And he is neutered. Maybe the vet placed the tag when he had that done? He sure is sweet though. Not sure why he was neutered, but it sure helps with the smell!

In our state it means that he comes from a TB free herd. Maybe, not positive, but it could mean that the origional owners were part of the scrapie program.

yes scrapie was what i think the vet was checking at the sale i bought mine at that had the clips,

Vets CAN "neuter" goats but normally its done at the farm with bands by the breeder,

thats a verry nice looking little doeling, not telling what all could be in the mix with that one though,

Hard to tell about the mix of the rest of them. My parents are not discerning They've gotten all thier goats through phone calls from people who no longer want thiers anymore, or don't have the patience to nurse them through an illness or something of the like. They gave away all the males a little while ago and swore they'd never have another. My mom was tired of nursing doelings that didn't make it. She takes it very personally. The one in the pic is neutered, so she says he doesn't count. I'm not sure how long they'll stick to the "no males" rule - probably until someone calls with one to give up for some reason.......

When I registered for the Scrapie program, I had a choice of either metal or plastic tags. I opted for the plastic but usually tattoo instead.

I would have to say "pure bred cute". He is really really cute and looks to be such a sweet heart.
We have tags in all our goats becasue the shows we go to require Scrapie tags. Now the wethers are not required to have them, but we do because they have to have a tag of some sort, so why not use the free ones?
Precious is also very precious.

Thanks for such a nice reply Sweet Goats. I'll have to tell my mom she has a "pure bred cute" goat - she'll like that! She was fascinated with the tag, but really could not care less whether it's pure bred or not. I'll tell her the tag probably means it's been checked by a vet and declared healthy. That will make her happy. She really loves her goats. It's fun for me to go home to Georgia every Christmas and see what she's added to the "family". I must say, with all the mixes, she's has some really interesting looking ones!

I look forward to getting goats when we move permanently to our homestead. I'd really like some to milk though. I'm still studying on that.

Wow Chris! She's beautiful - and sure looks a lot like my mom's! Is she big? Mom's is really bigger than her others.

And that little doeling is adorable! What a cutie!

Hello Penny,
Nice big goat your mom has and I love those ears.
Tell your mom she has a good candidate for a cart goat. If he grows some more and fills in, all she needs is the harness and cart! I'm thinking about keeping a wether from this years kids to keep my buck company and then train to cart when grown.

Why not just castrate all the buck(lings) she's given? They're the same as does after that as far as no stinkiness, lol. And they won't breed, hehe.

i'd vote nubian, boer cross, from the more rounded muscles, and coloring.

the tag is likely a scrapies tag, required at many sale barns, probly put in when he was still a buck. he's nice looking.
