Like Mother, Like Daughter...

I love watching my does as their daughters and grandaughters enter the herd.....the family similiarities are so funny and sweet. Here is Chinook and her daughter, Breeze. Breeze was bottle raised, Chinook never cleaned or nursed her, yet they are cut from the same dough. They do the same things at the same time in the same way! Just one example:

They must be a lot alike to catch them on camera at the same time!

I've had a doe at my house for a month, breeding. She hates every single one of my goats. Another gal brought a goat today, it's actually the first goat's granddaughter - but they have NEVER been in the same place. Funny, gramma took right to the newcomer. I was amazed. I wonder if they smell familiar.

DocM, I have heard that about goats-- that they remember very well, and will remember "family" or other herd members after being separated for a long period of time.

The grandmother had never met the doeling before.. the daughter had been sold and the doeling born on another farm. When I say this big old doe didn't like anyone, I mean, she charged every animal (goats, sheep, chickens, dogs, cats) and I had to put her in a pen all by herself. They're all snuggled up together right now.

I've had bottle-fed doelings, when moved 'up' to the big girl's pen, always seem to cuddle up with mom - you find them lying in two's or three's, by relatives. Blood must be thicker than water, as they say.
