Quite pleased...

The folks we bought our Nubian doe that is a dream to milk, and a young La Mancha doeling rang me today. They are moving to a place four hours away and downsizing a bit for the move. (They are a goat dairy that make and sell chevre)

Well! They offered me several goats.. I bought one and am getting another one tomorrow. The one we brought home today is a registered Nigerian Dwarf doe that is not quite seven years old, bred, due to kid just before Christmas. She's bred to a beautiful, blue eyed Nigerian buck.

I'm SO happy that I got such a wonderful deal on a terrific doe - for those in the know (and I'm not one of them) she's from the Chisholm Trail line. She's thrown triplets and quads and twins. I can't wait to see what she gives us this Christmas - and she's a beauty herself!

The other goat we are getting is an Alpine with cou blanc coloring. She is also bred, but I do not know to what. I'll be finding out tomorrow.

So, now we have one purebred of several breeds of goats.. lol!

nigerian

Now you go posting about nigerians. Someone posted pictures a few days ago showing their nigerians and I complained. I have been looking at every web site in the U.S. at different nigerian herds. Non are very close to me and there are very few for sale at this time of the year. Most of the sites on the net are out of show herds and very expensive. Buck kids from $250 to $500 and doe kids mostly in the $300 to $400 range. I have nubians, but looking for something smaller also. Do they have any more ? If it is in east Texas that wouldn't be a too bad a drive. Are their prices reasonable? Do they have a web site? I noticed that Texas has some very nice nigerian herds.

They only have six left, and are keeping those as they are young and produce such a high butterfat milk which is good for making their cheese. I just lucked out, honestly.

Have you thought about the minis? They are half Nigerian Dwarf, and half standard dairy - i.e. Nubian, La Mancha, Alpine. That brings the size down, raises the butterfat, but they aren't quite as small as the Nigerians.

nigerians

I have nubians and the thought of crossing has crossed my mind. I will keep looking. Seems as though most will be born after the first of the year.

Crossing Nubians with Nigies would produce very hardy (and adorable!) minis that make wonderful milk for cheesemaking. I myself am doing this. The Nubians have the highest butterfat content of the larger dairy breeds, and the Nigies have a very high butterfat content to their milk.

Perfect for cheesmaking!

Congratulations on a great deal! One of my former nigerian bucks was quite the 'lady killer' - all the does wanted him. One of my nubian doelings wanted him so badly, she somehow got over/under/through a five foot cattle panel.......So I guess I'll have some mini nubians too......I may hang on to the kids to see how they milk. Maybe it wasn't such a bad thing after all? lol I was so upset!

These MiniMancha doelings are 10 months old and will be bred in December. I am using a real nice buck from another breeder. These are 4th generation, so is the buck I will be using. These will be the first Minis that I will have freshening on my place, can't wait to milk them. Lamanchas have a good amount of butterfat too, higher than the swiss breeds and Lamanchas have extended lactations, longer than Nubians (these are generalizations about each breed, there are individuals of each breed who preform differently than the breed as a whole). So with the nigies attributes mixed with the attributes of the lamancha, I am quite anxious to see what these doelings do this spring. These are from great bloodlines....and very spoiled!

LOL! Um.. I keep remembering how badly the buck we borrowed stunk - I'm thinking that we might get a really nice little buckling from the ND though - and I bet he could breed all the girls except his sister next year!

You're probably right about the stinky part... altho as far as stinky bucks go, he is not the worst!
If it wasnt for his FANTASTIC genetics, I probably would have stuck with a youngster as well.
Need any more chickens? I'm headed to Hico next Saturday!!!
