Field Trips

Ok I am a 4H leader and every year I try to set up a field trip to take the kids somewhere. Last year we went to the vets office and he did a Ultra sound on the expecting goats, and he spent so much time with everyone answering question. The year before we went to a place called yocom McCall, to see how they test for the micron count on the fiber, (we all raise cashmere). Now I am looking for other ideas on where to go this year. every year we do a community service project, we usually go to a place like a shelter and help fix things up, clean things or whatever they need done. My question to you all. Do you have any other ideas that I can do with my group?
Thanks for your help.

Hmm, does it have to be fiber goat related, or can it be any goat-related field trip? I've been the goat project leader for several years, and am changing over this year to a home club with dd14. She's been the only kid in the club who is consistently showing goats, and the club has changed so much that we decided to go solo, but to also let the Extension Office know we would be open to having other kids join with their goat projects. We've done clinics on showing, toured a goat dairy (and helped with the milking), and have visited various breeders. This year we want to tour the cheese plant north of us. Are there any large scale Cashmere breeders in your area that would welcome a 4-H group tour? Maybe at shearing time?

No it does not have to be cashmere related. we do not have a dairy farm around or anything like that. I ahve thoughtof it also.
I am about the largest breeder around here, the closesrt is about 4 hours away. We also do demo's and we do a couple showmanship clinics every year.
Thanks for your help.

Sweet Goats - Does it have to be a large breeder? I think it would be just as interesting to go to a smaller farm during kidding season. The breeder could take the 4Hers through and show them the new kids and maybe talk about what vacinations are given and after birth care, ect. I am also a 4H leader and for the past two years, I have had groups of kids from my club and a neighboring club come and do that. I aslo have different activies for the kids after tour and we have a great day! I am not a big breeder by any means, I only have 15 goats and this gives them am oportunity to see the different acspects of a small operation. Good luck and have fun!
