Covexin-8

We were told that we should give Covexin-8 shots to our goats. This info came from a well-seasoned breeder. Do any of you have any experience with this?

I normally just give Bar-Vac CD&T. I prefer not to give any medications that arent needed, and CD&T is recommended by everyone while Covexin is recommended IF youve had problems with the other diseases it covers. If I couldnt get Bar-Vac I would use Covexin. If you can buy it locally youll probably come out cheaper since vaccines have to be refrigerated when shipped

I've also heard that. I've often wondered if giving that instead of a CD/T would be beneficial. It can't hurt, can it? is it more expensive to get at all?

Covexin 8 has CD&T along with vaccines for several other diseases.. It is more expensive than just giving the CD&T alone

"What vaccine should I use?
1. Clostridium Perfringens Types C and D +Tetanus Toxoid in one vaccine, against overeating disease and
tetanus. This vaccine is labeled for goats.
2. Multivalent clostridial vaccine ( 8-way vaccine)
One example of a multiway clostridial vaccine, labeled for sheep, is Covexin8. Covexin8 is more reactive and
may cause a higher incidence of adverse reaction at the injection site.
Covexin8 may preferably be used in herds which have had problems with blackleg and malignant edema
(gas gangrene). Although blackleg and malignant edema are common and costly infections in sheep and
cattle, they are very uncommon in goats. "

Covexin 8 has 8 colostridial vaccines in it combined, which means you get more coverage of other clostridials (where CD&T are just clostricials for C, D and Tetanus) but the more clostridials in a vaccine the more diluted all of them are. So if Tetanus is a problem for you in your herd, than you may want to give Tetanus on it's own and C&D on it's own, this would give you more of each drug per vaccine.

I recommend moving to Covexin 8 only if your vet or other goat raisers in your area give you information that you have some of the other clostridiums covered in the vaccine. Like if you have ever had gangrenous mastitis (malignant edema) than yes, use Covexin 8 herd wide. If problems like this are not in your area, it's a waste of money, a much bigger lump to deal with and with the hysteria about lumps and CL, I wouldn't do this to my herd, or give the shot IM. vicki

I have a nigerian breeder friend of mine that gave this shot to all her goats for the past year and huge, huge lumps on all of them at vaccine site. She changed her mind on it. I'd never use it. Just do CDT and I use the Pasturella pneumonia shot also.
