BoSe questions

Ok this is geared to those of you who use selenium supplements with your goats.

What form do you use? I called my vet ans found out that shots run about $5 or $6 per goat...but i see online that the selenium gel oral dosage is about $ 9 for enough to dose quite a few goats...5 ml per goat and package has 80 ml in it.

Having never given this I'm curious as to what everyone does/uses...all advice will be appreciated.

I use the Bose shots. A bottle of Bose costs about $16.00-$20.00 a bottle which will do *many* goats........so I don't really know where your vet got their pricing from.

I imagine the Vet gave you the price for getting the shot from him. Many Vets wont tell you that things can be bought OTC and you can give them yourself. My neighbor went to a Vet to get worm medicine for his dog. and paid $12 for 3 doses of Safeguard, enough to treat 1 dog. For $13 I went to the local feed store and bought enough to treat 17 dogs.

I've never seen Bose over the counter, but I but the whole bottle from my vet. Give yours a call and see if they'll sell it to you.

You have to buy Bose from the vet but ours sells it by the bottle no problem.

I paid $30 for a 100ml bottle. Sounds like a lot but the dose is quite low per goat. This would cover my whole herd for two years.

With MuSe you have to be careful with it because it is more concentrated and goats can get poisoning from it. I use the selenuim gel because I don't like to give shots if I don't have to. Plus, the goats love the gel.

Ive read several articles that say Mu-Se is TOO CONCENTRATED for goats and could kill them

"Bo-Se and Mu-Se -Vet prescriptions are required for both products and Mu-Se is intended for cattle and is too concentrated for goats. Injectable medication for selenium deficiency. Since selenium deficiency exists at different levels throughout the United States, it is critical to follow your veterinarian's directions on the usage of these products, as well as supplemental loose minerals containing selenium. See page 541 of Goat Medicine, by Dr. Mary Smith, for a map of the United States indicating areas of selenium deficiency. Most of the East Coast, down to Florida and westward through the Great Lakes region, plus the West Coast, including California and parts of Nevada and Idaho, are selenium deficient to different degrees."

This map shows areas that are deficient:

We have used both the Bo-Se ($16.00 a larger bottle) and the Selenium E gel. We used to use the Selenium E gel a week or so before a show to pick them up on their pasterns if they were down. We used to give Bo-Se to kids right after they were born and then a yearly shot or more if need be. Then we developed a feed finally where we don't have to use Selenium supplementations anymore.

They had pretty heavily regulated the use of Selenium in feeds to .3 parts per million except i notice the horse feeds typically carry more selenium???. They supposedly pulled selenium in the 70's because they felt it caused cancer. Then they realized that it maybe helped to prevent cancer after they withdrew it so they added it back to the feed in small quantities. But you know how it is ... once they banish something it is hard to get it back in. What is pretty ridiculous about their whole ban on Selenium is ... we tested it and tested it on our herd and raised it up to .5 ppm's. We were able to do that as it was labeled as not a complete feed but must be fed in conjuction with hay or pasture. We prefer feeding all of that anyway so that worked for us. Meantime, it didn't make a difference how much selenium was added - the individuals that were down on their pasterns were still down on their pasterns no matter. We did have some amounts of E. Finally we reached a nutritionist in the state of Iowa that recommended to us the level of E to work in conjuction to allow selenium to work. It was a pretty high level that we used at first and after the course of a year we finally adjusted it to a comfortable level. Most feed manufacturers don't place that level of E in their feed because it is expensive. We did despite the high cost and continued research and now we don't have to use any selenium supplementations. What a relief, we really dislike giving shots also.

i don't know if any of this info will help or not,

Have you tried going to pbsanimalhealth.com to see what kind of a price the vets buy the Bo-Se for. You could also try Valley Vet or Jeffers. We were only purchasing it for around $16.00 a bottle. I also remember buying the selenium E gel at midstatewoolgrowers
