Exclamation anemia/bottle jaw help!

I have a 50 lb. doeling with bottle jaw. I've just completed a three day course of safeguard, but what can I give her for the anemia? She needs iron, but what is the way to give it to a goat- our local vets seem clueless-

Iron Dextran injections
http://www.motesclearcreekfarms.com/...treatments.asp

And Vitamin B-12 would probably help some too

Oh ok, thanks Bearfoot. But remember Lisbeth, that the worm that causes Bottle Jaw has a 7 day cycle so you must re worm in 7 days. Oh and my last baby girl has Lisbeth as her second name...Georgia Lisbeth..

lisbeth i would give her red cell and vit b shots. with safeguard you have to be sure this is working in your area as we can see a lot of resistance to this wormer. have a fecal check done at your vet.

Personally, I wouldn't use Safeguard for a goat that sick. I would move to something stronger, and absolutely do follow-up fecals to make sure the wormer worked. Red Cell will help her build her iron levels back up.

I would hit her with a heavy duty Wormer.
Cydectin 1ml per 25lb
Valbazen 2 ml per 25lb
Ivermectin 1 ml per 50 lbs 1 % cattle injectable , sheep drench at 6ml per 25lbs

1ml = 1cc

Iron shots , vit b injectin and red cell in water. When was the last time she was treated for cocci ? I would treat for this also. Maybe some probios also.

some use iron bolus pills like the ones given to cows... I personally use the iron liquid. It can take a week or two to return to normal. reworm as said. make sure teh wormer you are using is really geting the worms. I believe in OK panacure is not working as well as some wormers.

Good goat minerals higher in copper not sheep/goat minerals have helped w/ fending off parisites. It is not a end all beat all but I found a copper deficiency will cause more problems w/ worms.

Here is a very good site, with research material, on parasites,wormers & doses,and bottle jaw. http://www.scsrpc.org/ It even gives studies done on actual farms of how resistant some strains of parasites are.

About the only thing Safeguard/Panacur is effective for in the south is tape worms and that's at 5x's the label dose.
