won't eat natural dewormer!

Hi~

We just got some natural deworming compound from Hoegger's. It says to mix the powder with molasses and the goats will eat it right up. Well, guess what? They won't touch the stuff.

We tried pressing some of their beloved bagged food into the spoonful, but they only ate the pieces of food off that didn't have any molasses on them.

Is there something else that goats like better than molasses that I can mix this stuff with? Do ALL goats love molasses? I don't know if it's the deworming powder or the molasses they're turning their noses up at.

Dee

My friend used my milking grain mix ("Show Scratch" - 4 parts whole oats, 2 parts whole wheat, 1 part cracked corn, 1 part black oil sunflower, 1 part calf manna), topdressed with the Hoegger dewormer, and then mixed the whole thing with a spoonful of honey. I bet you could also use corn oil or veggie oil of some sort to bind the powder onto the grain.

My does hate molasses.

Cheers!

Katherine

All my goats love molasses. They HATE hoegger's natural dewormer. Which should actually be used as a preventative, but not a wormer. Also, it should NOT be used at the schedule they suggest, and not for pregnant/lactating animals. They say it is safe simply because it is not a chemical and they therefore do not have to do safety testing or something like that... (read this : http://fiascofarm.com/herbs/wormer.htm) I belive you're supposed to give them a high dose once or twice a month instead of weekly.

To give hoegger's wormer, I had to mix it with molasses till I could make grain sized pellets of it, then mixed it with the grain. they take forever to make, as my goats won't eat a single ball of the stuff, they'll eat all the food around it, than leave the ball... So that leaves me with making teeny tiny grain sized peices that they can't avoid. They sometimes still didn't eat it, and I'd have to mix up more, in a drenching syringe with molasses, and drench the goat. And hope that the goat swallowed it all. Only one of my goats actually enjoyed the drenching, and that's because she likes chewing on syringes with molasses in them, lol. I have to drench all the animals that don't get grain as well.

My goats didn't like hoeggars either....but they did like Molly's herbal wormer

http://fiascofarm.com/herbs/wormer.htm#purchase

I only buy Formula #1 Herbal Wormwood Combination and don't bother with the tonic. I use it once a month in spring/summer/early fall during the full moon phase. I have to say, they did not take to it at first. It took 2-3 times offering it to them. It really helped when I mixed it in some kelp (they LOVE kelp) but now they eat it straight when it's mixed in with their feed and seem to actually enjoy 'worming' days. Don't give up just yet. Goats are finicky and very cautious of new 'stuff'. Be persistant and keep offering it to them mixed and alone. They may eventually try it like mine did and like it. Or give Molly's wormer a try!

I used it for a bit. It took a bit of work for them to eat it. I mixed it with about a cup of grain on the milking stand. If she didn't eat it she didn't get any grain. It took about 2 milkings and then the does starting eating it. no problem after that.
