Okay, the hernia is actually 1 inch

Does that make a difference? I examined the hernia carefully and it is about 1 inch across...

I think the hernia band is specifically for healing a hernia in a very young animal, not for holding it when an animal is pg or has things protruding through it...

Some people have told me that they have successfully bred animals that have hernias. Some say if I try to support it with a band during pg that if an intestine comes through it will get stuck between the band and the body and not be able to go back and definitely result in strangulation and gangrene...

DS wants to get it "fixed" but the general consensus is that this is not a good option. YIPES!

Sure wish we didn't like this doe so much...

jillis i can understand you in your wish to reproduce with this doe.
you could try with a band and control every day if it still sits tight on top of the hernia. would you be prepared and have a c-section with her? because of the hernia she might not have enough strengh to push the kids out. also extended period of time pushing would make the hernia bigger.
another factor to think of is, before labor every thing loosens up in order to get the kids trough the birth canal. the area where the herenia is is already very thin.
just some thoughts

Thanks, Susanne.

Yes, it is obvious, isn't it?

I know I am grabbing at straws, and will just have to reconcile myself to not breeding her.

I am also thinking that if a breed the ND buck to my pretty, little Alpine doe with the beautiful markings, I will probably have some minis just as pretty as she is...
