Showing Boer Goats?

HELP! I'm planning on showing my fullblood Boer buckling at our fair's
open-class Boer show. This is my first time showing a goat and I'm not sure how I should fit him. Should I trim his tail, body, ect? If so, how? What about cutting back on hay before going into the ring? Any advice and show tips would be appreciated.

Hi!

My daughter just showed her Market Boer yesterday at her 4H fair.

She gave him a a full body 3/8" shear and clipped his hooves. She also got some sheen spray stuff at the feed store to make him look pretty.

She fed him as normal. He got 1st in his class and 3rd overall.

It is my understanding that for a Boer, all you need to do is trim up loose feathers and make him LOOK neat and clean. Whiten his whites and shine neatly trimmed hooves. Dont leave cow licks or any stray hairs, but no need to shave whole body. That is usally done with milking breeds.

Yes, don't shave. Like chma4 said, trim hair around top of hoof and square tail. I bathed with blueing shampoo (wash same day if possible to keep buck smell down) to get the white, really white then followed with Show Sheen (for horses)that left it shinny and soft to the touch. Trim hoofs, rasping them square also. Don't forget to clean that waxy buildup under the tail.

Most judges like a flat, black leather collar used (I used black nylon)and shown by the head, like sheep instead of holding collar, like dairy goats. I would practice both and watch which your judge likes better.

Don't let him be too fat... Fat doesn't show a good goat. You shouldn't have to stop hay before going in.

Good luck, I'm rooting for you.
