torn meniscus in Boer buck

I just found out that my registered, 3 year old Boer buck has a torn meniscus in his right rear leg. I took him to the vet because he was not getting better (thought a sprain or twisted foot would eventually go away) and I am concerned about his ability to breed if he only has one good leg in the back. The vet gave him steroid shots for 5 days and said to put him in a small space for rest and recuperation for about 2 months. Then he felt the buck would be able to breed one doe per week, maybe, with some aspirin in between.

Anyone ever had any experience with this? We have no idea how it happened. He was in a field with the young wethers so no challenges to his dominance and no does to try breeding.

But I'm looking for any home remedies or ideas that might help him maintain his breeding viability. The vet felt he could live a long life but would need more maintenance than a healthy buck in that he would need to be isolated with one other goat so he wouldn't fight, etc.

Thanks for any suggestions.

None of my goats has ever had knee problems, but my mother tore her meniscus playing soccer. She had an operation that was cheap and practically painless, with a small incision. She's fine now, and this was a few years ago. Maybe, if you're willing, there may be somthing similar for your buck. good luck!

I get a horse joint supplement from Jeffer's Equine called Animed. It is amazing stuff - everything in it is natural - just need to find out if the ingredients are okay for goats, and divide the dosage down......This stuff really works...I've used it myself. Two knee surgeries, torn cartilege in my shoulder, hip problems - NOTHING else worked for pain. I don't have insurance - so no surgery for me.
