Price for goats.....

Hi!

I can't afford to buy them right now, and we still have to fence the area, but I know someone with Pygmy's. The babies are about 5 months old, and the chocolate female they want $100 for, the chocolate and white male, $35.

Are those good prices?

It probably depends on your location. The $100 for a pygmy doe seems high to me, but it might not be where you are. Are you getting them as pets?

That's not a bad price for a doe. I would not want to milk pygmies. They have tiny, tiny teats! The milk is great, but not worth the effort in my book. If you want milk, go with a dairy breed.

Entirely depends on the conformation and whether or not the goats are registered with the NPGA. Unregistered pygmies cost is less but you can still find nice quality 100% pygmies for a reasonable rate. I have one unr doe I paid 75 for. Her dad is a reg champ but mom was unr. She is absolutely beautiful, so worth trying ti register her. Check out websites on pygmies to get an idea on what you are looking at. NPGA has one that is real good.

I don't know how it is in NY, but here that would be about right for the buck and high for the doe, unless she is a registered Pygmy. When we had Pygmy's, I doubt we ever paid over $60 for a doe and we had some nice ones.

I live in southwestern, NY and have never seen a registered pygmy go for that much. As far as milking a pygmy, I do and her teats aren't much smaller than my full size goats. They are harder to milk if you have very large hands, but my son that has large hands has a problem with my full size does so....

I have her daughter and she is a first freshener. I tried milking her earlier in her lactation, and her teats aren't quite as big but I feel it's due to her being a first freshener with only a small doe to feed. Her little one makes sure she get's every last drop so never was able to get any milk out of her...LOL!

I just paid $40 for my Pygmy Doe In western NY. She is unreg. but Is really a sweet pet I'm retiring her since she is aprox 8 yrs. So maybe a younger doe would be more?

If you want a small breed for milk, try a Nigerian Drawf or one of the Mini-Dairy breeds which is a result of crosses between Nigerians and regular sized dairy Breeds. Nigerian Dwarves are dairy goats whereas Pygmies are a meat breed. Nigerians genrally have more milk and you can find those with nicer udders and teat size if you look around. Almost any goat that is a first freshener (first time mom) is going to be more difficult to milk because of smaller teat size.

That price sounds right for MY area. For unregistered does, that is. I've payed 50.00 and 75.00 for my does, and have seen unregistered does from 50-100.00. Registered does, however, are ALWAYS like 200-300!! Saw one for 500.00 once. WOW. The pygmy buck sounds cheap to me, I payed 50 and 60 for my two bucks. As everyone's been saying though, it varies person to person and area to area. good luck looking for goats!
I started to milk my one doe last year but had to stop after I broke a finger. I think I'll be starting to milk my pygmies again this year, but will probably stop after I've got a bunch frozen in the basement chest freezer; I want to bottle feed a baby next year. Maybe I'll keep going; The one thing I remember from last year was that my hands ached from trying to milk my doe... Her teats were TEENY, lol. And my dad wonders why I want a nubian?
