Need opinions on dewormers

OK, I would like to know what y'alls opinions are on the best wormers for goats (and sheep). Tell me what you use, how you administer it be it orally, injectable or in feed and how much you give and how often you give it.

We were originally told to give horse wormer when we bought our goats, but in my opinion, it doesn't work well at all. Then our vet said to give Panacur which is basically Safe-Guard, so I doubt that will work either. Another lady told us to give Cydectin orally. Others say Ivomec.

So, I want to hear what y'all use and how effective you think it is.

Thanks

i have used panacure and didnt like fighting with a bunch of big boer cross does to worm everyone so i found a range cube wormer for cattle made with a molases base and would use that periodically, just put it out for a couple days so everyone got a good chance at what to them was a treat, but really they got a good dose of wormer, then i would pull it before anyone got carried away,
it came in a cardboard cube cant remimber the name, but if you have a TSC or Orchelins near you they should have it

I use Cydectin and Ivomac, both given orally and they both work well for my herd. Safeguard just does not work in my area of the country anymore. Don't give Cydectin to just bred or pregnant does though. As far as how often to deworm I don't go by a set schedule, I worm mine when they need it. I look at their coat, their eyelids and their gums.

I used Ivomec occassionally, but mostly I use Dectomax. My vet and I are agruing right now because he gave me a bottle of injectable dectomax and I wanted a pour on. He says that the injection works better, but not if I can't catch the stupid goat to give it to them. (I honestly don't know if the injectable and pour on are the same thing or not)

I know some people who use diamateous earth. I went to the health food store and got some food grade. Hoegger Goat supply sells it, but I didn't find any usage instructions on their page. They also sell a herbal wormer that was compared to chemical wormer. You can read about it here I can't recommend any of them yet as I am so new to goats that I'm still learning and anxious to see what others recommend.

I use Cydectin Pour on for Cattle, orally. The rate is 1 cc / 25 lbs.
Do not use on pregnant goats or goats under 4 months of age. it is purple and smells like gasoline, but that is it. I use it once every 21 days to break the life cycle of the worms, 2 or 3 times, then just as needed. I worm does the day they kid with Cydectin, there is not a milkwithhold time but I wait a few days prior to drinking the milk anyway, just in case.

For kids, i use Valbazen Cattle and Sheep dewormer Suspension at the rate of 1 cc / 10 lbs orally. Not for pregnant does. I worm every 21 days til they are old enough for Cydectin then hit them with a dose of cydectin as Valbazen may not kill all the worms that cydectin will.

I use Ivermectin inj. orally at 1 cc / 33 lbs for pregnant does.

I never use panacure as it is too weak.

I use an herbal wormer (Molly's Herbal) and my goats always have negative parasite counts. I also add several whole cloves to the wormer to kill eggs. I don't live in the south and we get hard frosts here, so results will vary, I am sure, depending on what part of the country you are in. In the south you might want to try herbal wormers once a month or more often, then get fecal counts. If there is still a heavy worm load, switch to a chemical wormer.

Also keep in mind, herbal womers that contain wormwood should not be used on pregnant does.

I have been wondering that for the longest time, 2 farm vets told me I could use it (on young kids). Where did you guys learn that you can't use it? I would like to read it myself.

I bought the Hoegger herbal but the goat who needs it won't eat it. Figures. I just bought some Nature's Blend goat wormer--we'll see how that goes.

Thanks, I am sure she knows what she is talking about. Sometimes I just wonder if people don't hear something one time somewhere and then tell everyone and they tell everyone and then it becomes fact. I am sure that is the case a lot of times on forums like these, ykwim?

BTW, I read a lot of your posts (and Vicki's) and you guys both give great advice. I love these forums.

PS--(I still give my babies cydectin, LOL)

Yes, i do know what you mean, TennesseeMama...Vicki has been a gret mentor to me and i was able to meet her "in real life" at a goat show here in Texas.unfortunately, it was quite busy and we couldn't talk as much as it would have been nice too..perhaps one day i will be able to visit her "spread" and learn some tips on soapmaking.

yes, sometimes info has a way of being distorted via the grapevine effect..you can only do the best you know to do
