Needles and Biomycin - Hoof update

My Boer bucks hoof appears to be better. The sore isn't gone, but it's not as red. Thanks for all your help! It is so wet here I don't know if it will ever clear up!

I have been soaking it in bleach in the AM and cleaning it and putting Biomycin on it in the PM.

As someone suggested here I gave him 3 injections (2 1/2 cc's) of biomycin sub Q the first day and skipped a day, then did three injections again - is this right? It seems like a lot.

And as for the needle - what size do you think works best for that tough boer skin? I tried a finer needle, but the thing barely even sucked up the medicine and was terrible to plunge out too, Why is that anyway?

Suggestions would be appreciated!

I'm glad your goat is getting better.

With some solutions, they are so thick, that you need a large gauge needle in order to suck the med (or wormer) up into the syringe. A fine needle just doesn't have a big enough hole through it to pull up a lot of the thicker meds, it's really a struggle. An 18 gauge (the green ones) usually do the trick with thicker solutions.

Off the top of my head, the injection schedule for the biomycin sounds right. When I've used LA200 for my goat's hooves, it was a 5 day course of medication. You'll find the infected spots just grow out of the hooves once the infection itself is gone. It'll look bad for a while until it gets to a point where you can just cut it out.

I'm glad your goat is doing better! And I can definitely relate to it staying wet and soggy.

I may be misunderstanding what you said-but it should of been-2.5 c.c.'s-none the next day-then 2.5 c.c.'s-none the next day-then 2.5 c.c.'s again-skipping every other day-but only 4c.c.'s per hundred at one time-not 3x-the 3x meant course of treatment-for up too 5 days-but if you did 3 shots a day and it worked good for you, maybe we all learned something new.Glad your goat is better!

I'm so glad he's doing better. I've tried every size needle they've got....still makes them mad when they get stuck. We've had the best luck with 16 or 18's I think.

I did three shots that were 2.5 cc's each every other day - but I was wondering if that was too much? Are you saying I should cut the dose to ONE 2.55 cc shot every other day?
