One week 'til Kidding -- Too late to vaccinate?

Hello all,

I am new to goats, and one of my does is due to kid in about a week (June 6 is 150 days). Is it too late to give her the CDT vaccine? At this late date will it give the kid(s) immunity? If I can still give the vaccine, are there any special steps I need to take since I'm giving it so late?

Thank you in advance.

That is a good question, I flat out don't know a good answer. if I were you right now, and if it were my goat today, i would go give her the shot. If the doe had never been vaccinated before, i would give her another shot in 21 days. Then I would vac. the kids at 6, 9 and 12 weeks of age. All CDT doses are 22cc SQ regarless of weight or age.

If anyone knows better, please correct me!

Thank you for the reply. You mean 2 cc and not 22 cc, right?

I found myself in the same situation. the vet said "give the shot - it won't help the kid much if at all, but it will help the mom." the down side is you have a 21 day withdrawal period before you can drink the milk. so you'll be dumping milk for a couple of weeks - which was very frustrating!

I vaccinated the kid at two weeks on the advice of my breeder, not my vet.

my friend does not vaccinate at all and so far (2 years) has not had any problems, so I guess you have to decide how badly you want that first milk.

I think I would give mommy the shot, then vaccinate the kid younger than normal. I don't think it can hurt them.

I recently went to a goat health seminar given by a vet who was raised on a goat farm. (Imagine! A vet who knows about goats!) He stated that to impart sufficient immunity the shot should be given at lest 2 weeks prior to kidding. Then give the kids a shot at about 8 weeks old, and another at about a month later. If the mother does not get the shot, he advises giving it at birth, and then 6 to 8 weeks later...

Go Ahead And Give The Shot 2cc To Mom. Then Give 2cc Tothe Baby(ies) At A Week Old, Then They Will Need Two More Boosters Four Weeks Apart. I Had A Doe Deliver Before I Gave The Shots. I Have Always Heard That Then I Found A Vet That I Now Work With That Is A Rumenant Vet And Goats Are Her Speciality, That Is Also What She Said Too Do.
