Waiting... any day.. I think?

We have two mixed does who are expecting and will probably deliver any day. They are oberhaslis/sannen and the buck is Nubian so we usually get "Flying Nun" ears. ;-)

How are people so good at knowing when their does are in heat? I can NEVER tell! I just end up taking them to the neighbor's buck and leaving them there for 3-4 weeks so I have no idea when the deed has been done.

This time, i took them over Dec 6th and left them for 4 weeks. So, they could have been due 4 days ago or 26 days from now.

However, one does has lost her ligaments completely, the other has one I can feel that is very soft and the other is gone. They are both kind of panting and are definitely bagged up. I'm hoping that next year I can figure this out and just bring them to the buck for the breeding and know exactly when they're due.

Very exciting. Last year was our first breeding and this year, I used a spotted Nubian Buck so I'm hoping the kids have some spots. Both Mom's are sold - Herriot is typical Oberhaslis color and Carmel is.. well... carmel-colored.

well, during the breeding season the bucks are housed on the opposite side of the fence, so when the does start acting all mushy, I know they are in heat. The flag thier tails, pee by the bucks, rub against the fence where they are, allow them to sniff thier behinds. Often they have a discharge. Some does are very vocal.

Ah, I only have does so buck around. I've heard you can rub a cloth on his head, then keep it in a jar and take it out now and then to see if they react. Maybe I'll try that next year. Yhe guy that owns the buck doesn't speak english and will probably think i'm out of my mind. ;-)

One of my goats, the Saanen, is normally very quiet, but when she's in heat, the whole world knows about it!! The little Nubian cross is always talkative, but she does show signs of discharge and slight swelling of the vulva. Both were receptive when I took them to the buck.

Angel, the Nubian, is due on Sunday, and I checked her ligaments tonight - definitely signs of mushiness! So I'm on baby watch too. :baby04:
